This collection originated as mysteriously as something out of a Shirley Jackson tale. More than twenty five years after Jackson’s death, a box is sent anonymously to one of her children. The box contained some of Jackson’s dusty old files including a handful of unpublished short stories. This led her children to the idea of publishing a new book containing these works. From there they found other unpublished Shirley Jackson short stories in library archives and relatives provided copies of long defunct magazines in which her stories were published. Together these makeup “Just an Ordinary Day.â€These stories are nostalgic and embrace a time when people shopped at the five and ten and it was fashionable to smoke cigarettes. In some of the darker stories people kill each other and ghosts exist. There are also some humorous nonfiction stories such as Shirley’s first attempt at writing, as well as the adventures of her grandmother’s crocodile fighting cat. Some stories are cute and clever like the wide ranging effects of an I.O.U. But no matter the type of story, Shirley Jackson is addictively entertaining and totally unpredictable. It makes me hope that another mysterious box of Shirley Jackson stories is uncovered again.
I could read Shirley Jackson every day and never tire of her stories. I hadn’t realized she was such a prolific writer, but I am determined to read every word she wrote. I had read The Lottery many years ago and I can’t wait to read it again as well as her other books. I have seen the movie “The Haunting of Hill House†(the earlier version is best), but anticipate reading the book. Thanks to her family for providing the unpublished works appearing here.
If you want to learn the art of twists in writing, read Shirley Jackson novels. They also give a sense of what it was like to live post-WWII.
Love these stories, used them in my literature classses and gave as a prize to student who loved the stories.
For a short story book, this one is great. The first story is the best as far as I'm concerned. When you are hunting for something to read before bed and want something with more light (or meat) than the predictable, ho hum stuff being churned out today...Shirley delivers.
I love Shirley Jackson and all of her writings, and this is a great collection of her stories. Some of them seem a bit out of place and unfinished of course, but they definitely have the "Shirley Jackson feeling" when you are reading them. I enjoy reading her short stories because it's a great reminder of what other great works she has written as well.
My God, I love Shirley Jackson's stories. Stephen King cites her as one of the best short story authors ever.
Shirley Jackson is the ultimate master of suspense, horror, and ambiguous humor. These stories will leave you hungry for more... a collection of some of her best works, including those that were untold. Anyone who appreciates good literature will appreciate this wonderful book!
