Now that Caroline has found love, she is eager to help her friend Jill fall in love in Laurette Long’s Hot Basque (French Summer #2). Caroline has just the right man in mind: a hot Basque named Antoine. The setting couldn’t be better—a villa in sunny Biarritz, and the author’s delicious descriptions of the foods and beverages made for tasty scenery. Each of the heroines is interesting, and their love interests feel realistic. The antagonist is a drama king who makes emotions run high. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the women; they’re a great group of friends, and each knows they can rely on the others for support in difficult situations.I did find the beginning a bit confusing as the chapters switch focus from one main character to the next. While it wasn’t too hard to get into the groove of the story layout, a bit of preamble would have been helpful. As is the norm in many romances, the story tension is due to angst from miscommunication between the love interests that is brought to a boil by scheming from the antagonist. While the base premise is not new, I did enjoy Ms. Long’s twist on the theme. With beautiful, wealthy and successful characters living large in the top spots of Europe, you can’t go wrong. I really enjoyed Laurette Long’s characters and her intriguing story line in Hot Basque. Although part of a series, the book can be read as a standalone novel.

My only really valid point of reference for match-making romance-novels is Jane Austen’s “Emma”. Although I found Laurette Long’s “Hot Basque” interesting after a slow beginning (for me), I never grew to like her characters and that’s a problem (for me). The author obviously wanted some of her people liked and loved and others not liked and loved. I can empathise with the author’s love of the Mediterranean and “the song of the nightingale in May” though I find France an unfriendly country and its people too full of themselves (much like the British). This leads me to my main quibble : “Hot Basque” is full of spoilt people, and the real fly in the ointment in the book has a personality disorder and like the others is immersed in affluence. There’s something about all this that makes me wonder. Of course, I warmed to parts of “Hot Basque”, and very much appreciated its conclusion (though foretold and delayed), so much so that I’d like to quote it: “…together at last, with her man, oh oui, her very own hot Basque.”but I’ve lived too long in a third-world continent, Asia, and look askance at the parts of Europe that have too much. Dare I say that geography does so much to define people and those blind to this “presence” live well but detached? What I’m also saying is I appreciate Austen’s Emma because she really has to do some serious thinking and serious maturing after her clumsy, vain and ridiculous plans go wrong whereas the know-alls in "Hot Basque"?! I noticed that “Hot Basque” has some typos which are easy to see and I know for a fact that its author would see and correct them or any of her friends would for her. So, why not? Despite my possibly absurd mini psycho-dramas, much appreciated, of course, the contrasts between the Britain of high stress and the France of easy-flow (southern France). Much appreciated the open sensuality and mind-enticing ladies of this book who give their views on sex without any to-do. Much appreciated the Italian “gigolo”, (yes, Italy strikes again!), the masculine hunks, the disordered sister, Annabel, and the chance to read a genre I don’t often go in for. Paradoxically, “Hot Basque” delineates to a tee a section of Europeans who – with relative unawareness - go about the business of life, proud of the silver spoons sticking out of their mouths…so four stars for me if not five.

A newly engaged couple living in Toulouse, Caroline and Edward from book 1, invite a friend living in Edinburgh on holiday to their family villa in Biarritz. Their match-making aim to have Jill fall in love with a cousin, Antione. The first third of this book introduces the reader to all the players, especially Caroline and Edward who got together in the first book. The friend they intend to invite to Biarritz, Jill, is in Edinburgh living the single life without much luck with lovers. Jill’s few escapades before her holiday are amusing, and I would have loved to hear more of them, but fewer self-deprecating comments about her body.Nothing is known of Antoine in this book until he turns up to meet Jill. I say ‘in this book’ because I think I’m missing out on some character information and development by not reading book one first.Frustratingly, when Jill and Antoine meet for the first time, we only get an idea of their reactions to each other via the third parties of Caroline and Edward, before we jump to the following morning and the inevitable girl talk about Antoine’s big muscles. We are often told information from either Caroline’s or Edward’s POVs rather than ‘watching’ it firsthand, which led me to feel this story was more about that couple than Jill and Antoine. Consequently, I didn’t get the connection I was hoping for with that couple. The latter half of the story includes more characters with complex plotlines of infidelity and mental health issues that could easily have been encompassed in another book.Hot Basque is a well-written story, with fabulous descriptions of Toulouse and Biarritz. Readers who love to hear about the antics of the uber-rich will enjoy this holiday romance; I have no doubt.

I studied art history in college and I'm a fan of tarot/oracle decks (mainly for the art and symbolism- I love all the new indie decks...) so I couldn't resist picking up the Art Oracles. I wan't disappointed- these are fascinating and so interesting! They don't follow any traditional tarot/oracle system, but if you know enough about tarot you can kind of make some connections. The artwork is quirky and interesting (not beautiful, but compelling) and includes not only an image of the person the card depicts but also a few symbols and images pertaining to their work- so you can actually use these cards if you read intuitively. The deck also comes with a little white book with information on each of the artists. Each card has three little blurbs on it- pithy insights on how to approach work, life, and creativity in the spirit of the artist depicted. One thing I liked about this deck was that it featured a few artists I was not aware of, so it became like a little research project to figure out what the saying on the car might be referring to. So it definitely inspired me!I can't recommend these enough- they are clever and fun, as well as actually being very insightful.

SO cool! Perfect for that person who has that niche mixture of both a love for art history and energy work and divination practices. This is not a practical deck for everyone, but for the person it resonates with it is perfect. For me I feel like the personality of the artist really informs the message, so the reading made sense to me. I think it may be tough to read for others, but who knows until I try. Women are represented, hallelujah for that. As far as the cards themselves they are really, really nice. The cardstock is smooth and kind of matte finished so they shuffle beautifully and it doesn't look like they'll weather fast. The art represented is great and funny at times, perfect representations of the personas behind the creations. The box is gorgeous, though mine was a little dented on the bottom. I decided to keep it anyway since the cards were fine, but I think this product could benefit from shrink wrap or something as only the cards are wrapped and the box lid is white. The booklet is brief but helpful as it gives blurbs of the artists lives. Less a meaning guide for the cards. Definitely for type b people who use oracles with intuition more so than referencing the booklets. All in all a great price for a deck that fits right into my collection.

I am a professional reader, and this deck won’t be for everybody. It comes with a small book, but if you aren’t on point with your intuition you will have a hard time doing readings with this deck.Having said that, I find that knowledge about individual artists portrayed on the cards provides super spot on readings. If the provided book isn’t enough for you, reasearch the artists a little more. The only let down for me with this deck is that out of fifty total cards there are only fourteen artists who identify as women. I was very much hoping for equal representation in this area. The reason I purchased this deck is that it is being utilized in a group challenge that I am participating in. I loved the cards pulled so far, but had I known the deck was three quarters male artists I probably wouldn’t have purchased it.

I just wish there was a guide for layouts or like more specific instructions on how to use them. I mean of course if you are looking at these you are probably into reading oracles and tarot anyways but that one extra thing would have been nice. These are very nicely done and the artwork is super cool. It would be a great gift for that weird mystic art-history major (aka me) if you are able to resist the urge to open them and use them for yourself. In that case I recommend you just order two decks right now, because you are going to want to keep one.

High quality cards, lovely box, great artwork...but no accompanying guidebook to assist with interpretation. I would've loved to keep these for the exquisite craftsmanship alone, but there were only a few I understood. Even an online explanation or app would be great. It's a regretful return.

I have a hard time using this deck for detailed readings. In the mornings I get one card and have a general idea of how my day will play out. The cards are quirky and all around positive. The booklet describes the lives of the artists in a humorous manner.

Love it! Saw it and had to have it. Great novelty gift for an art lover or aficionado. Beautifully drawn cards. Great to bring out during a party for a bit of fun!

I absolutely enjoy the messages and guidance this deck provides. I use them almost daily, as it always brings about some humor into some very tough life advice at times.

“Thin Air”; Richard Morgan. Not worth "ONE STAR"There are bad books, badly written not worth reading and there are bad books written by good writers and then there are terribly bad books. Thin Air is a terribly bad book. This is sad because Morgan’s early SciFi is worth a read and for some a reread. This is not, nor is this worth a read to begin with.It is a book that was apparently plotted in a video game for pubescent boys. The main actor is a super hero with an onboard AI. He is almost indestructible and does not eat or sleep because he has just come out of hibernation. O yes and it takes place on Mars. The plot line consists of killings, fights and of course sex. Was going to use the “F” word in place of sex because at points the novel turns to porn to keep your interest. Sadly this is just bad porn and unless you are 13 or 14 this will have little interest for you.I did not finish this and I am very sorry I started. I could not fnish it. It’s like a bad date you know it’s bad but you keep hoping. Don’t hope. It's a bad date that won't end. The only thing to do is put it down and walk away.

Like a lot of people, I was blown away by Richard K Morgan's debut novel "Altered Carbon" -- I enjoyed the noir slant to the writing, the vivid dystopian future and worldbuilding, the nihilism. It was a fun read, Kovacs was a character I wasn't used to running across. If you've only seen the Netflix series, do yourself a favor and read the original.Since then, Morgan's been stuck in this same rut and, frankly, it's getting tedious. The other Kovacs novels, Thirteen and now this -- another story about a genetically enhanced/specially trained/purpose bred natural-born killer with a soft spot for the people he decides to protect and a laser-like focus on the job at hand.I mean, we get it already. What's frustrating here is that Morgan is fun to read, it shouldn't be a predictable slog through his books. But God, has this whole thing gotten repetitive. The details and world might be tweaked, but basically he keeps writing the same story with, at heart, the same main character over and over. At some point it becomes clear that it's just going to be another round of the same thing -- it's a thing he does well, but that can't stop it from getting boring. If you've never read another one of Morgan's books, this is probably an enjoyable story. But for myself, until I hear he's tried something new (like his fantasy series), I'm out.

Much extremely hazardous Martian political maneuvering, deadly unknown (or unsuspected) opponents, explosively violent fights, bad-ass weaponry, excellent and very bleak world-building and a couple explicit sex scenes. He’s back!Although this clearly not Takeshi Kovacs, it IS Pure Morgan. Imagine a noir-style detective who is also a vat-grown (loved the Neuromancer nod) ninja....A new “hero”, and a wonderful supporting character, a sort of implanted, protective and deadly (to our protagonists enemies) medical support/ mother hen / combat strategist / super computer who has only our guys interests at heart.Hope to see more of Hakan Veil (and Osiris) in future stories.

Another gritty, excellent novel from Richard K. Morgan.... he just keeps knocking 'em out of the park! I really like the whole 'enhanced human' concept, and nobody does it like RKM. This outing is reminiscent of "13" in some ways, but not so much that you might think you're reading a 'retread.' It's the same "anti-hero" type character that RKM excels at, but It's a whole different world (literally) from "13," and building worlds is where RKM really shines. He somehow manages to paint an incredibly detailed world, without clobbering you with a mind-numbing barrage of exhaustive detail in huge blocks of verbage... it's painted in small bits and pieces, gradually but constantly filling in the whole picture as you progress through the story. My only complaint about RKM is that the novels are so long between releases. I've read (and re-read) all of his major novels, and they just can't come fast enough for me.

I have read all of the books that Richard K. Morgan has written, including all of the Takeshi Kovacs novels (e.g., Altered Carbon, etc...) The common theme is the killer as a hero. Like Takeshi Kovacs, the hero Thin Air, Hakan Veil, is an ex-government/corporate killer who is trying to make ends meet after being cast out.Haken Veil (known by his choice simple as Veil) has been bio-engineered since before birth by a strangely named interplanetary corporation named Blond Viasutis (perhaps a corporation named for two people, Blond and Viasutis?)For reasons that are never completely clear, Veil didn't kill all of the people he was supposed to kill on a mission and was cast out from Blond Viasutis and stranded on a colonized Mars. As with the Takeshi Kovacs novels, there's lots of corruption and people who try to kill Veil. Both Kovacs and Veil are professional killers. In the course of the tree Altered Carbon novels, Kovacs becomes a more complex character than Veil is in Thin Air. Perhaps future novels will also deepen Veil's story.Part of the plot in Thin Air revolves around Martian and colonial politics, but the novel is much less political than the Altered Carbon books.Morgan is talented when it comes to writing suspense and the plot drives Thin Air forward. I found the ending a bit "pulled out of the hat" when the faction driving events is finally revealed. The plot in Thin Air is wrapped up in the end, but the plot definitely lends itself to sequels. If you liked the Altered Carbon novels, you will probably like Thin Air. The novel is a bit like a new album from a band that you like: more of the same, but with some new themes. This is good enough for me and I plan to read the sequels.

Classic Morgan grit and heavily modded humanity swirling with conflicting political entities at all levels muddying the trail. You know its gonna hurt and you know nobody really wins but sometimes you can clear a bloody space to take a breath.Fun adrenaline pumper with high end operators

The biography of Muhammad by ibn Ishaq doesn't survive in its original form but al-Tabari had access to one of the versions. This is what makes this volume so valuable. Al-Tabari is meticulous in citing his sources which is useful as he often uses other sources like hadiths to supplement ibn Ishaq's text. One thing that annoys me is that this volume could easily be combined with the following volume. There is good information about Muhammad's move to Medina and the beginnings of Islamic community.

Tabari's opus is magnificent indeed. His Taarikh (History of Prophets and Kings) is a great peace of early islamic historiography, earliest with the exception of Ibn Ishaq's Sira. SUNY did great job translating this 40-volume into English. The reder will find out how early Islam developed according to its official narrative, and how it conquered neighboring lands. I would suggest to the reader to also check historiographical works on early Islam by Hoyland, Crone, Cook, Ibn Warraq and particularly by B. Lewis and M. Sharon, which provide more context for Tabari's History and discuss historicity - or lack thereof - of its narrative.

This Volume covers the first four years after the Hicrat. Among various excurcios to neighbouring tribes or caravans the volume covers Badr and Uhud battles. Marriage of Mohammed (AS) to HZ. Aisah, conflicts with Jews in the city of Madina. Tabari uses Ibn Ishak, Ibn Hisham as his sources and time to time provides variant stories on same subject with chain of isnads. Contrary to his Tafsir, he does not say which one is more acceptable to him. The translators have some preface and time to time expalanatory commentary in Fine Prints which I found most of them unacceptable. I did not appreciate sometimes their twisted opinions in a book which is supposed to be a translation. But again I appreciate their work for making this book available to English readers.

Very detailed. This is the brand I will be purchasing for all future manuals I need.

At $70 per hour for labor where I live, it is well worth the amount I paid on Amazon for this manual so I can do most repairs and save a ton of money. I am not a mechanic but this manual makes it easy to understand and do most repairs. Now, if I could just find a place to buy parts that weren't so outrageously over priced.

Has all the info you need to fix your atv

Great book very informative can’t wait to tackle new fix

Great manual. Lots of photos for ease of repair. Got my problem solved and I recommend this manual to anyone who is repairing their ATV

we have fixed everything we needed done on my 4 wheeler fast shipping

Great detailed manual. I wish I bought this eight years ago.

Invaluable resource. This book has saved me hundreds of dollars already.

Payback At Morning Peak ONE Jubal hiked with abandon through the mountainous forest, cradling the Colt slide-action rifle in his slender arms, proud his father had seen fit to allow him use of the small-bore .22. Not quite eighteen, he was just under six feet, nearly as tall as his father, and did his best to dress like him: whipcord pants tucked neatly into calf-high boots. Two rabbits he’d shot that morning hung from a leather-tooled belt around his waist, a gift from pa. He thought of cleaning them himself but decided he would let ma take care of that little chore. He imagined her proud face when he returned home with them. Rabbit stew would be a welcome change from the tough buffalo meat cured in the family smokehouse. He thought of his sister Prudence, pouting earlier today when ma had told her to stay home, shuck peas, and tend the fire. “Jube gets to have all the fun!” she’d said. “Miss Prudence,” ma had replied, “you’re only fourteen, and it’s best you tend your chores.” Strict but fair. Jubal didn’t mind the company of his sister, though, as they had much in common. Much to Mother Young’s concern, Pru often ventured alone into the forest to hunt berries and wildflowers. The boy topped Morning Peak, seeing Colorado stretching out to the northern end of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A late afternoon sun warmed his chapped hands while he marveled at the painted landscape, aspens shimmering as their new spring leaves caught the sun. To the west he could just barely see his family’s cabin, nestled into a meadow lined with fir and limber pine. A gray smoky haze from the log structure filled the small valley, and he knew Pru had been doing her job with the fire. The wind changed, and Jubal’s eyes widened. There was too much smoke. He noticed unusual movement around the house and heard eerie sounds of strange, jubilant voices floating up through the dense valley. His reaction was immediate. Gripping the rifle in front of him to clear the way, Jubal broke into a dead run and began to close the hefty distance to the cabin. He tore through thickets down the canyon, sharp branches ripping at his leather coat as he plowed through the brush. Minutes later, he stopped within shouting distance of the compound, his legs on fire with exertion, his lungs needing air. A pile of bright gingham fabric lay on the earthen courtyard. Like a body. The clothing looked to be his mother’s, her dress cloth flapping with the breeze. Pru’s horse, Butternut, lay near the well, her legs thrashing as a rush of blood flowed from her neck. Jubal counted five men riding on horseback in the courtyard, with several more stirring around the outbuildings and barn. They all seemed determined to celebrate, shouting as if they had achieved a great victory. Trying to control his breathing, the boy slumped behind a massive pine. He wanted this day to start over, wanted to forget the body in the yard, wanted only to run, but Pa would skin him if he didn’t stand as a man. Where was pa? Jubal took several more deep breaths. He moved to his stomach and started to crawl. He’d gone only a few feet when he rolled onto his back, fighting panic, his nose stung by the sharp and disagreeable scent of burnt flesh and manure. He had to keep moving. Rising, he darted between a stand of scrub oak, then bellied down and once again crawled, hiding behind the scattered chamisa. Laughing and drunk, the men staggered around the toolshed and outhouse. One dark-skinned fellow looked different, wearing a feathered, flat-brim leather hat with a bright yellow braided string running under his chin. He carried a bow across his back and a quiver with arrows attached to his belt. He looked familiar, the way he carried himself. The whole raft of them seemed related. Jubal’s thoughts drifted to more pleasant times. The family together, Pru laughing at his jokes, his parents sharing secrets. When was that? A lifetime ago. He forced himself back to the present. He had work to do. He looked down at the rifle. He’d killed animals for food, but could he kill a man? He shifted on the rough ground. Maybe it didn’t matter. A wail came from the barn, growing louder as Jubal crept closer through the thicket. He caught a glimpse of the two-story structure’s exterior. And then he saw his father. Jubal, Sr., hung from a pulley outside the hayloft, arms stretched high above his head, legs dangling above the wicked flames of a fire. Charred remnants of his clothing and strips of skin swung from his chest. A chunk of red cloth, which Jubal recognized as his father’s bandanna, had been stuffed into his mouth. A man with a filthy poncho wrapped around his shoulders tossed hay from the loft onto the torturous blaze. Jubal’s pa was near to death, his bare legs burned. Blood matted his neck, arms, and chest. Then the wailing stopped, the body swaying like a pendulum. Jubal stared, looking for recognition. His father’s lips were moving. With each group of words, a nod, then he would begin again. He gazed at Jubal. Did he speak? Did he call out, “Save yourself”? His eyes rolled toward the smoked sky, once again the same litany, but this time the head drooped, the shoulders and legs relaxed. The body settled into its trusses. Jubal chambered a round in the .22, raised it, and took a long, dreadful moment to pray. His head pressed hard against the rifle’s breech. He wiped the moisture from his eyes, adjusted the rear sight, and shot his father in the head. The sound, though muffled by the crackling fire, still startled the fire-tending Mexican. He turned toward the noise as Jubal stood and pumped another round into the Colt. Trembling, he fired, his bullet catching the man in the lower stomach. The man dug his hands under his heavy leather belt, searching, then doubled over as if looking for something on the ground. Jubal’s second shot pierced his head just above the cheekbone, dropping the man like a rock from a high place. The boy slumped to the ground, watching the remains of his father swinging from the barn. “Help me, Pa. What have I done?” Fifty yards off to his left, two men, their hair pulled tautly into braids on the sides of their heads, dragged tied bundles of his mother’s and father’s clothing. They soaked the pile of garments in lamp oil and lit it. Trailing the fiery bundle behind a crazed horseman, they made great circles around the house and barn, setting fire to the dry grasses. “Be the man I taught you to be,” his pa had once said to him. He eased to the ground, too frightened to move and yet strangely not seeming to care. Jubal looked down at the two paltry rabbits still hanging from his belt. The men by the house stopped their whooping to look at the area of the barn, the structure now fully taken by rising flames. The cracking and popping of the dried timbers had partially covered the sound of the small-caliber .22, and Jubal was still safely unknown to them. He watched as they cavorted in his family’s vegetable garden. Others circled the lifeless form of his mother on the ground, making coarse gestures and poking their rifles at the body. Pru. He hadn’t seen her anywhere. Where is she? Jubal started to pick himself up. He was sick with fear and remorse, but he’d do his damnedest. Crouching low, he sprinted to the edge of his mother’s root cellar. There he remained unseen behind the canted door, thinking how easy it would be to slither out of the clearing and into the welcoming shelter of the spruces and whitebark pines that surrounded the homestead—then run for his pitiful life. A high-pitched scream came from the edge of the woods, beyond the burning barn. Pru was running into the clearing where their mother lay, her bonnet streaming behind her, tangled in her long blond hair. Wildflowers fell from a basket on her arm. She ran like a frightened animal, shouting to her mother. A horseman spotted her and pursued her across the open field. Ignoring the other men, Jubal took quick aim with his rifle and pulled the trigger. The shot went awry. The horseman scooped Prudence up in one swift powerful move, gripping her waist and swinging her up beside him. She protested loudly, beating her fists against the man’s head and chest. Jubal had very little chance for a shot now, he was afraid of hitting her. The other men honed in on Jubal’s position and fired at him, bullets dancing past his head. He collapsed onto the ground and crept to where he could use the burning farmhouse as cover. Pru was taken into the tree line from where she had just emerged. He moved along the ground. Once he was at the other side of the farmhouse, he ran into the nearby woods. All of his instincts told him to keep his head down and pursue cautiously, but he couldn’t ignore his need to chase the horseman. He had lost his parents. He couldn’t lose his sister. Once in the woods, he could hear Pru’s voice coming from several directions, all of her cries amplified by the reverberating valley walls. For some time he searched for her, scrambling from one tree to the next. When he was finally resigned to the idea that the horseman had moved out of the valley, he heard hoofbeats coming from the east. He ran in that direction, only to see a lone rider bolting at a gallop between the trees a hundred yards in front of him. The man had left Pru in the woods. Jubal quickened his pace and backtracked from where he had last seen the rider. After a lengthy search, he found her… her face bloody from a deep forehead wound, clothing twisted about her body. There was so much, too much blood. On his knees, he pleaded with her to speak to him. He cradled her in his arms and rocked her, trying to coax a spark of life. The wildflower basket was still looped around her arm. Jubal gently pulled out the leaves and twigs caught in her hair. He combed her soft tresses with his fingers, then used his neckerchief to clean her face of dirt and blood. “Jube?” She opened her eyes, trying to focus. “Tell pa a man tried to… hurt me.” Jubal moved her gently, thankful she was alive. “Shush, now, Pru. I’m here. You’ll be all right. Try and rest.” Pru seemed to fall into a heavy sleep, a spot of blood leaked from the side of her mouth. Jubal swung his rifle over his shoulder and lifted her into his arms. They needed shelter, and so he started up the long slope toward Morning Peak. Nearly half a mile from the house stood a group of rocks the two of them had explored in the past. Boulders as tall as their barn had split off from the cliffs above, and wagon-sized stones had fallen away to the base of these rocks, forming the makings of a cave. Jubal tried to awaken Pru while he scaled the steep terrain. “Remember the ‘Sultan’s Castle’?” “You mean the Emperor of Youngdom?” she answered slowly. “His castle?” His eyes misted. “Yep, the very same. We’re almost there.” As they reached the bouldered cave entrance, Jubal turned sideways with his precious cargo in order to slide through the narrow gap. Once safely inside the rock-sided enclosure, he took off his coat and wrapped his sister in fleece-lined warmth. Just enough light peeked from a V-shaped opening for Jubal to see Pru’s ghostly pale complexion. Dry leaves spotted the cave floor and lay in drifts against the wall. A rag doll with a clownlike smile sat on the parched vegetation. It belonged to his sister. Jubal laid Pru on the bed of leaves and moved the doll to a pile of carefully placed rocks. “I smell Cotton, Jube.” “What?” “Cotton, my rag doll I used to play with. I smell her. I dabbed some of ma’s lilac water on her ‘cause the old stuffing got kind of dank.” Jubal took the cheery doll and passed it under his nose before he laid it next to his sister. Indeed, it smelled slightly of perfume. It had been years since he and his sister had used this stone structure as a playhouse. “Don’t tell ma.” Her body heaved a long sigh of pain. “Sorry. Don’t tell that I spent time here. Ma would skin me.” Jubal ran his hand softly across her face. “Are you in a lot of pain, sis?” She nodded and held her hand to her mouth. “Jube… I’m not seeing too well.” She cried, not like a child, but deep and steady. “My side hurts, just here. I’m bleeding something awful.” She tried to touch her rib cage. “Maybe ma’s pain potion, under the washbasin. The small purple bottle.” Their mother kept codeine elixir for severe pain, on a shelf in the kitchen. Jubal wondered if he could get to it or if it had even survived the fire. The men must have left the farm by now. There was still daylight, and he could be down to the farm and back in twenty minutes. “Pru, I’m going to try to get you that medicine. Will you be all right for a bit?” “Ma,” she called. “Ma, I don’t feel well. I’ve got deep pain there. A man was with me. Make it go away.” Jubal dropped to his knees. “Can you get me the man in the moon? He’s frowning.” She was delirious. Maybe it would be a good time to get back to the cabin for medicine. She moaned, knees drawn up tight toward her chest, hands dug between her legs. Her forehead was dampened with sweat, her face flushed red. But he was afraid to leave her in such pain. “Jubal Young, a man-child.” She rolled to her side and reached a hand out toward him. “I wrote a poem for you, Jube.” “I’d like to hear it.” She tried to smile. “I don’t think I can remember it all. It’s about the land, the animals.… I gave the poem to ma to keep for your birthday. She put it away somewhere. I really need ma to help me. It’s a lady’s kind of thing. Please.” Jubal made up his mind. “Listen to me, Pru. I’m gonna scoot down to the house and I’ll be right back. You’ll be fine for a few minutes, won’t you?” She nodded, trying to smile. Rifle in hand, Jubal ran back toward the homestead. The image of his sister lying huddled in misery, her pale face distorted, blurred him to anger. He would kill them all. He felt anguish, dizzy with it. I will track them to the ends of the earth. The men had not left but were spread around the clearing, apparently looking for him. Jubal skirted the tree line and started once again to crawl. He realized the farther he went, the more he would be cut off from his sister. Never mind, he would deal with that later. First, these men. The setting sun turned the raging fires that were once his home into a fiery pink mist. He took a last glance at the sad bundle that was his mother and continued to the root cellar. With the slide-action Colt steady on the door, he let out his breath and squeezed the trigger softly. A man with a battered straw hat caught a round in the neck. He dropped his rifle and sat on the ground, both hands swatting at his neck as if shooing a pesky bee. Gripping his throat, he tried to squelch the bleeding. Jubal slid another bullet into the chamber, aimed, and fired it squarely into the center of his forehead. The man’s sweat-stained hat spiraled backward. Arms outstretched in surrender, the renegade seemed to melt into the earth. The other men scurried down behind his father’s overturned hay wagon, several with antiquated, single-shot weapons. Jubal hit the ground as the balled rounds ripped at the earth around him. Forcing himself to be calm, he once again reloaded. The men called out to Jubal, denouncing him, describing in detail what they would do to him. All the while bullets plowed into the ground close to Jubal. They continued to fire, one of the younger men skipping over a pile of clothing to charge toward the root cellar. As the man drew a long-barreled .44 from his holster, Jubal’s bullet caught him in the chest. Stumbling, he tried to reach Jubal, pounding his pistol at the soft earth. Moving within twenty feet, he slipped to his knees and then slowly eased to his side, as if preparing for a nap. Several rounds splintered the root cellar’s plank door, a long thin piece of wood catching Jubal in the side of the head, opening a wound. For an instant he couldn’t see. He wrapped his bandanna around his forehead to stop the bleeding and fired several more shots into the distant hay wagon. The intense pain from his gashed head gave him some welcome courage. His family had suffered, and this pain seemed to make him one with them. He thought of Pru, her bloody dress, and pa, Jubal Thaddeus Young, Sr., a man striving to make a life for his kinfolk, killed now by his own son’s hand. Jubal had a moment when he thought maybe his father would forgive him his death and be proud of him. Be the man…, he would have said. Jubal prayed that it be so. Jubal rose and heard what he thought was a hornet, then a high whistling sound and a shocking pain in his left hip. An arrow protruded from his body. It had not penetrated the skin of his back but stopped somewhere inside his lower waist. Jubal dropped back down on the native grasses to crawl below a small rise in the earth beyond view. Scuttling along on his right side, he was careful so the arrow did not catch in the heavy foliage. With all the weapons in play, rifle and pistol rounds eating up the earth around him, Jubal thought it odd he would be hit by, of all things, an arrow. His mission was too dangerous, and from the looks of the house it would be a miracle if anything survived the fire. He would have to go back empty-handed up the steep trail leading to Morning Peak and Sultan’s Castle. But Jubal didn’t know what else he could do for his sis. If these men could track, and he knew at least the man with the bow could, then they would trail after him, but he knew the rocky path so well he was confident they couldn’t get around him. He glanced at the farmhouse, it continued to burn. They would follow. He wanted them to follow. Hours had passed since Jubal had first come upon the attack. He deemed himself safe for now, having barely made it out of the bloody grounds of the homestead, inching along on his good hip. Grasping the embedded arrow with his left hand, he clawed and elbowed with his right. The ghostlike image of a tall gray-haired man kept him going. Jubal knew him. He felt as if he were missing something, a reason. It eluded him. The figures darting about his family’s property were mere phantoms without motive. His lack of memory, the why of this kept him strangely alert. Jubal limped across an open meadow. Looking down at the protruding arrow, he thought it must have glanced off his hipbone. The length of it jutted out from his bleeding upper leg like an errant tree branch. A stand of ponderosa pine lay ahead. He pushed on, glancing back often to see if he was followed. Not yet. At a cliff overlooking what his sister referred to as “Young’s Valley,” once again he found his sister’s retreat, the small opening where two large rocks formed an inverted V. The light started to fade as Jubal eased himself into the cave, where he was greeted by the sound of his sister’s soft, forced breathing. A strand of light from a gap at the top of the boulders illuminated her pale face. He felt remorse. His search for the medicine had not only been worthless, but he had also been rewarded with a deep wound. He watched his sister, wondering what to do next. How to deal with his own fierce pain of the arrow was beyond him. Prudence stirred. “What would pa say?” she asked. It was almost as if she had read his mind. “Pa once said to me, ‘Prudence, when all else fails, simply smile.’ It’s a little harder done than said. Wouldn’t you say, Jube?” “Pa was full of sayings.” “Was?” she asked. Jubal was happy to hear his sister once again speaking clearly, but she’d caught him off guard. He tried to cover his mistake. “Oh, I just mean he’s always saying these… platitudes. I think that’s the word. Anyhow, he’s funny sometimes, right?” Quiet for a long time, Pru worried Jubal when she finally spoke. “I’d been picking flowers.” Her voice softened. “I think I was running and calling out to ma. Then, a smell like somebody’s sweat. Is Butternut okay?” Jubal didn’t answer. He sat at her side, the arrow jutting out of his left hip, the blood flow fortunately stanched. “A man was mean. He did hurtful things.” Her voice began to fade. “I want ma. Please get her.” He wished he could. Pru raised her clenched fists and made feeble striking movements into the air. She cried out. Jubal once again stroked her forehead. “Try to relax if you can. It will be better soon.” He pushed his arm under her neck and brought her head close to his own. He kissed her softly on the cheek. Her eyes opened wide. “I love my brother Jubal. He’s funny and kind.…” Then she was gone.

I would like to thank Mr. Gene Hackman for this wonderful western story. Mr. Hackman brought to life the tragedy that we all go through, which leads to redemption and justice. That’s what this story is for me; that you can get justice for those you care about, when their murdered. You may have to work at it, if that is what you’re after, but it will come due. The bill comes due for everyone. Trying to find a character to relate to with this story was a bit difficult. At one time, I felt a connection with Sheriff Cox and hoped that I would act as he did, if ever someone came down my trail needing a friend. Yes, Jubal’s story is like our story in so many ways, maybe without the gun play. We meet people we never forget, those we wish we could forget, and then there’s those we don’t give a second thought. Thank you for sharing Mr. Hackman. Payback at Morning PeakSince I only purchased the digital copy of this book, due to leaving on a trip and not wanting to wait for the book to arrive. I will be purchasing the paper back copy in the future. This is just one of those to add to my book shelf along with Zane Gray, Louis L'amour, and William Johnston not to mention so many others I enjoy time after time. Again Thank you Mr. Hackman for this wonderful adventure.

Although I had never read any Western fiction, I read this book because I wanted to see how well Gene Hackman could write. He has always been one of my favorite actors, one that I felt might be very good at anything he put a good effort into. It turns out that I was right. This is, in my opinion, a very good book. It grabbed my interest from the beginning and held on until the end. The only complaint I have concerns one word. Using the word 'payback' (which wasn't used until 1955) in the title could be excused, but several times in the novel, the characters also use the word in their dialog, which is a distraction. Since reading this book, I have tried some other Western fiction, notably by Louis Lamour, and feel that Mr Hackman has done a good job. His writing seems more geared to modern readers than the other Western authors I have now tried. I hope to see more work by him.

In honesty, I had my doubts. So many people plan to retire from one profession and "write a book" without taking instruction in creative writing. It seldom works out the way they had hoped. Mr. Hackman surprised me. For the most part he avoided the common trap of adverbs, gave great descriptions of landscape, weapons and clothing, altered the length of his sentences and provided a steady amount of action, which is necessary in a good western. I enjoyed the book.

I had some trepidation about buying this book, but I was curious about what Hackman could do, and the plot looked interesting. As it turned out, I was well pleased with the results. Gene Hackman does a good job of pulling you into the action right from the beginning, and you start rooting for the protaganist immediately. The impetus for the story is the slaughter of Jubal Young's family by a gang of vile heathens, one of which you'd like to see die immediately. The story follows Jubal as he tracks down and subdues the gang members one by one, either by turning them in to the law, or in some cases killing them, usually in self defense. One of the gang members is one of the vilest villians I've come across in literature in a long time. You really want this guy to die.About half way through the book, a sweet love story evolves, but doesn't get in the way of the action. And action there is. It keeps you turning those pages.I lived in Santa Fe, NM (Gene Hackman's home) for twenty years, and one day, several years ago, while testing out my new 4 wheel SUV in the nearby foothills, I came across Gene Hackman in his. I was on my way back down, and he waved me over on his way up, and asked what to expect further on. We talked for awhile, and I found him very pleasant and down to earth. He thanked me for the information, and said to watch for his wife and dogs further down the mountain, as they decided to walk for awhile. About a quarter mile down the road was an oriental woman with two dogs. I waved and continued on down. From that meeting on I was definitely a Hackman fan, and that was another reason why I wanted to read his book, and I'm glad I did.If you like Westerns, you'll love this.

Have read both novels written by Gene Hackman and believe he may have found his second career! He has been a favorite actor of mind for many years - his characters are often brutal men living in a brutal time, but Mr. Hackman places himself inside the character and performs admirably. His novels carry the same roles as he injects himself into the characters of his novels - very well done! Readers will enjoy his stories and the characters will transform the reader into the story!

I can't remember where I learned that Gene Hackman had turned writer, but when I did, I had to check it out. While Hackman's forte will always be acting, he's no slouch as a writer either. He delivers a solid, believable western tale of revenge and frontier justice without romanticizing the people, places or time frame. Great job, Gene: I hope you have many more novels in you. I'll be in line to buy and read them.

Couldn't get in to this one, I think I only read one chapter. Didn't like the book at all.

I guess I was expecting more. I thought the story line could have had more twists, and more excitement. It was kind of like reading an old Mickey Spillane novel about Mike Hammer. Once upon a time it was pretty exciting, but not now. I've been conditioned I guess for more excitement.
