This CCNP book is a mess... as others have said... it's like it wasn't reviewed very well before published... there are graphics/configs/examples evidently missing (where it should be, it actually says things like "ILLUSTRATION... need to get this done tonight...") but I guess he didn't get it done that night! Weird to see author's notes in a final printed version.The labs are a mess, a complete mess. Configuration results sometimes don't match the current lab or the last lab! So you're stuck trying to figure out what changed. Sometimes configs change but he doesn't instruct you to change it. Other times they revert back to previous lab configs, but he doesn't tell you. I really wish he would AT LEAST identify a base lab config prior to each chapter... at least. But no, you're stuck trying to figure out where he started his labs in each section.Having said that, trying to backward engineer configs and figure out configs from what he's TRYING to explain does force me to learn it better. An unintended consequence for those that do the research.The book is easy to read, and he has a plainspoken way of presenting the information. If you want to just read through this quickly, it will be a little confusing... trying to follow the examples... they are all over the place. But if you take the time to investigate his labs, and figure out what he's trying to do, you can learn a lot from it. Which is why I gave it 3 stars.* Update * As I used this book to completion, the mistakes got worse and worse. I just couldn't let it go without commenting... and lowering the review to 2 stars... for example, he'd use an illustration of 172.12.23.1 and 172.12.124.1... and then he'd refer to 172.12.123.1... huh?! So you have to decipher which address he was referring to... this got tedious and confusing... simple mistake if it happened once, but it was prevalent throughout the book... I'd rather LEARN what I'm reading not decipher mistakes!

I got to the advanced OSPF chapter and decided that the lack of flow and explanation was too hard to follow. I like my training material to be self contained, it seems like this book necessitates a lot of online research, which isn't a good way to do things. For instance, my CCNA book (different author) had it's lack of explanation too which led to many hours of extra thought, but was pretty well detailed and was my only source. In some areas, it had an incredible amount of detail, which I like.This book, on the other hand, had me working with a frame relay network out of nowhere, with no explanation. I had no prior experience with frame relay and the CCNA only briefly described it. I found the authors video to learn more about it, so was sidetracked.Besides what is lacking, the book seems like the same exact thing as the authors video series, but with LESS explanation.

If you want to lab up everything be forewarned that he seems to have not intended this. Many times not enough info is provided and he will switch up seemingly unimportant information mid lab. Its unimportant if you're just reading but if your labbing it up kind of a pain to go from "setup this BGP sceniario then, the next page the AS numbers are different". I've found this to be the case multiple times.

This book is great. It is full size 8.5x11 inches. I has larger print that is easy on the eyes to read and it's leave plenty of room to write in great notes. It coincides nicely with the video course that Chris offers. It has great easy to follow labs that show all the commands and output, in case you don't have your own practice equipment. I really like having the hard copy so I can pull it out and study anywhere I am if I have a few minutes. I passed my CCNA with Chris's Book and Course and now I am onto my CCNP. This book is a great deal for the price.

The content is great. I like his writing style. He explains things well. What I didn't like was the hard copy of the book. It was too big and poorly published. I ended up reading the whole book on my free Kindle version. I'm definitely going to purchase the switch guide but I'm just sticking with the digital copy.

I do like the book, i tend to follow better than videos or require a mix in my learning to absorb the info... This book is pretty identical to the udemy course, i on page 45 and found 3 errors, 1 on pg 45 an output screenshot is actually missing left with a reminder for the author to finish it up at night?? Goofy things like this are fine if its once or twice, i hope i dont run into to much more by the end of the book.

Very good study guide. One criticism is that the lab setups are so different for each topic, I was reconfiguring GNS all the time to keep up. But overall a very solid book. But as with all test preparation (and learning a new skill in general) never take one authors view on a topic. I always read at least two books for each exam.

Well written. Easy to read. Not pedagogically effective. It would be better if it had some exercises to "check for understanding" and to reinforce our learning. Most people cannot learn effectively with a straight narrative. Also, does not serve well as a reference work. There is no index. If you want something to read along with whatever else you are using to study, this may help. But if this is the only book you use, it will be insufficient to study from.

Probably my favorite thing about this book was that it didn't just list off "tips." It gives you full-blown techniques that you can learn and tailor to your own college life. I'll share details about my experience. I achieved straight A's before, occasionally in high school and consistently at technical college, but never at a university. I could no longer skate by with taking good notes and the occasional last-minute cram session. This book helped me most with one of the key points of academic success: time management. This book offers an almost foolproof time and task management system when followed closely. You'll also find techniques for studying, writing papers, avoiding procrastination, taking exams, doing homework problem sets, and it works for any major. I'm a computer science major, and this book would work just as well for a political science, history, biology, education, or engineering major. I could take the study techniques and apply them to writing a program, for example.I said that you don't have to read the entire thing, and that's true. I skimmed some sections, while I thoroughly read and re-read some other sections to ensure I absorbed everything. I'll also say that you don't have to stick to this book 100% of the time, that would be impossible, and the author knows it. Stuff happens, sometimes you simply don't have enough time. The techniques in this book can be resumed after weeks of neglect. I stuck to this book about 60% of the time over this last semester, the rest of the time I was in a never-ending loop of procrastination and last-minute study/programming marathons. When I got tired of that, I would return to the system and be back on track in no time.This book doesn't make it effortless, academic success is still hard work for most. Those to whom it comes naturally are either in piece-of-cake majors, are flat-out geniuses, or, most likely, are employing the tactics listed in this book! This book gives you all of the tools you will need to improve your grades in college, while having more free time!Are you a good student but want to be a great student? Get the book. The strategies for studying differently for technical courses vs. liberal arts courses is focused and works surprisingly well. The method for writing academic papers cut my thesis writing time by almost 40%. And I thought I was doing very well to start with. There are many books on studying available. I have read dozens and used most of them. This is the best one. Yes, this system uses simple tricks. But put them together, and it is an incredibly strong system. I could brag and say what good things I have been able to achieve after I started using this system, but I would rather ask you to try it for yourself.

This book gave me confidence! I was a lazy student throughout high school. I barely got my high school diploma.This year I have surprisingly become the top student in class. My instructor has said several times I'm the top student (grade wise). I made the only 100 last test lol.I was a terrible student before this and after reading this book things changed.Buy this book if your struggling with university or community college like I was.

I couldn't get through college the first time around. I used this to prepare for school before going back again 7 years after. I now have 4.0 gpa while completing 19 credits a semester (Going for an engineering major). Its often difficult to listen to others study recommendations, but Cal has such a simple strategy that it's realistically doable. I want to thank the author obviously, but also all the people who wrote a review!...caus I probably wouldn't have ordered it

This is the second book I have read by Cal Newport and I would highly recommend it. The only criticism I have is that he takes too much time re-emphasizing the amount of time saved by using his method, which becomes tedious at times. More importantly, he doesn't give a side by side comparison of two students using his and the conventional method, or show how it can be realistically utilized by someone with a full course load. It almost reads as if he views all college students as taking survey courses and don't have jobs in addition to school. I would have liked to heard more about that.Like I said, however, this is a good book full of useful tips and strategies to manage ones time and grades in college.

This book is right on the money. While it is written for college students, I use it with my college prep students and recommend they read it again after they graduate HS. With both an engineering and a humanities degree, I can attest to the fact that his strategies are exactly what is needed in both types of courses. Mr. Newport doesn't lecture; his style is very readable. It's more like a peer to peer conversation over a latte than anything else. It's nothing like a teacher lecturing how to do this...

To put it simply I would say that the tips and end of chapter summaries provide a great deal of help in adding tools to your students tool box of learning strategies, I would definitely recommend any college student to read this as the three sections (organization, grade improvement and research/essay development) provide anyone with at least one thing that could make a great deal of difference in succeed in college classes. It is important to realize that some of these strategies take effort and so this book wont turn just any student into a maestro, however, applied effectively I would say this book could make the difference between excelling in a class instead of merely succeeding. The writing is simple and interesting, making it an easy and quite enjoyable read.
