Bought this book for research and for a class in law. It was good, concise, and current. The price was right and I was happy to get it. I do not understand the people who cry for "Malpractice reform". They obviously have not been the victim of legitimate malpractice --what I mean by that is not complaining of malpractice because the dr was rude or late or expensive. I mean the kind that leaves you maimed and changed for life because someone involved in medical care either didn't care, or was doing things they obviously knew they had no business doing. In those situations, you find a large uphill battle. Its very expensive to try a malpractice case, and its not a "given" that you will win. There are large expenses just to prepare the case, and so many people are left in lifelong pain, disability or disfigured with no compensation because they either could not afford to pursue the case, or were unable (did not have direction after hearing "no" etc) to get the right people involved. This book lays out the law and the process. Very good book

As an ex-Yahoo, I enjoyed the trip down memory lane for the parts that I was there for, but it also filled the gap for me on the years after I left. It was quite humorously written and definitely was not boring! Strategic misses are tough to avoid; not many executives can know the future nor step out of their own shoes to imagine it, or be able to take the leap of faith to go down a path that could be one that nobody approves of. We Were Yahoo looks at what could have been for the company I was fortunate to have been a part of for so many great years.

Great read!Jeremy Ring was there from the very early days and tells a great story. Fascinating to be taken back to the early, exciting days of the Internet. Ring is a smart, knowledgeable insider who takes us along on the wild rise and ultimate fall of Yahoo. Even better he gives the reader a dead-on analysis of how/why Yahoo failed and ultimately how/whyGoogle and FB took over the world. A must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Internet, entrepreneurs building high-growth companies and anyone curious what it was like to ride the rocket-ship Yahoo!

Yes, Yahoo. The dotcom era was an amazing time and Yahoo was the center of that universe. I look reading any all things Yahoo. I find the rags to riches to rags saga so fascinating! Great book from a Yahoo insider.

I started using yahoo when it first came out. It was great at one time, but now has too many problems and I was wondering why. I was hoping this book would explain that, but it barely touched on the technical aspect of yahoo and instead focused on advertising and shareholder price. And about midway through the book it got long and boring.

A fantastic journey into the perspective of Jeremy Ring, a witness to one of the biggest business stories in history.

About two-thirds through We Were Yahoo!, author Jeremy Ring writes the following: "Is Yahoo! a media company or a technology company? The company could never agree on this central question. There wasn’t a single CEO in the history of the organization who effectively directed the company toward a single strategy.”That’s a good insight. There are others about how the Internet was transforming advertising during the dot-com boom of the late 1990s; Ring opened the first east coast office of Yahoo and oversaw the creation of sales programs as Senior Director of Sales Programs. And about some of the challenges caused by trying to merge technology and media cultures.However, I can’t really recommend the book overall.It’s just not very well written or edited. It skips around, repeats, and uses strained metaphors. It’s almost as if there are several chunks of different books here. There’s the book about what it was like during the dot-com phase of Yahoo when the stock was headed into the stratosphere. There are the ruminations about all the coulda’, woulda’, shoulda’s in Yahoo’s past. Shoulda’ been Goggle. Coulda’ been Facebook. There’s a fairly bizarre personal story that’s more or less a complete tangent.The book also lacks any particular payoff for being told by an insider. The author’s time at Yahoo mostly gets dealt with in a couple of chapters. And, other than some accounts of dot-com euphoria and differences between how Yahoo and traditional media worked, the insider insights are both thin and scattered. In addition to being told in a rather disorganized way, the post dot-bomb history is told mostly from the perspective of an outsider. It doesn’t really square with the title.Fundamentally, this book just lacks a strong narrative flow. For example, issues of sales force organization early-on pop up in a discussion late in the book about Yahoo’s ultimate failure in search. To the degree that the book has interesting content, it’s just tough to get through it and connect to a broader storyline because it so often just skips from one year or one argument to another.

Uneven read. Parts of the book were interesting in getting a basic grasp of international bank secrecy. The other parts were all about a self indulgent guy who comes across as a hybrid Bernie Madoff and Mother Theresa. In other words his reason for suddenly deciding to roll over sounds like a cheap dime store novel.His ego and self love would make Narcissus blush.Also would have been better if he named names of the rich and famous that he claims are tax cheats instead of teasing with generalities i.e "friend of Hillary Clinton", etc.

This was an interesting book for about half of the chapters. General topic about banking corruption is worth the read. The author thinks way too much of himself and this keeps ruining what could have been a decent story. My suggestion is, if you are really interested in the topic, read the book, but read it fast. Do not dwell on each word, trying to find some deeper meaning.

Really fascinating read and somewhat disturbing. One has to wonder who is really running things but I can assure you after reading the bookthat it is not "the little guy". He just keeps paying and paying. It seems to me that the DOJ definitely has their wires crossed when the ONLY person to go to prison for this huge spate of corruption is the person who exposed it. What is also deeply troubling is Secretary of State Clinton's role in settling the UBS scandal. It is unclear why she was involved at all but it her involvement certainly reaped benefits for Bill, The Clinton Foundation and Hilary. A great read, well worth your time.K.Looser

Lucifer's Banker. Doubtful that any library will ever proffer any manuscript more entertaining and revealing about the corrupt DOJ and by extension other bloated government bureaus. The take-away message from these pages is that when one is in negotiations with government authority then deceptions and betrayals loom large in the background. Author Brad Birkenfeld displays his extensive education and savvy proclivities as he transports us through the long journey from executive opulence to a thirty one month prison stay and then transitioning to super wealth as reward for exposing tax evaders.As I turned the final pages of this truly important work I found myself conflicted between exposing nefarious practices of secret Swiss banks and how it all will expand and further empower the reach of US government forces. The abuse of government authority, as detailed with intense frequency by author Birkenfeld, is always in direct relationship to income from tax revenues. The notion that increased tax revenues from any source will always be of benefit to tax payers is highly misplaced. All government agencies are permeated with waste, corruption and relentless expansion. The Department of Justice is one example of how budgets are politicized with internal vanities and greed.

This was a really good book to read at my leisure. The author told the story in a way that you could connect the dots and at times allowed you to feel physically present along his journey. I would recommend this book for those of us who have careers in finance. Although this book is told from the "victim's" perspective, I would really have loved to get the perspective of the DA or another adversary depicted in the book; but I guess that is completely up to the author's discretion. Overall, a total recommend!

While he certainly did a commendable job of disclosing the criminal activity undertaken by UBS, Mr. Birkenfeld is not your normal whistleblower who uncovers wrongdoing of others. It was him that was instrumental in this criminal activity by his own admission (as he says banks outside of CH wanted to stop the activity, Mr Birkenfeld was keen to take those clients and make his 18% of ill gotten gains which were never recouped). Thus, while I certainly believe that some reward was warranted, $104 million was excessive (perhaps something closer to 7.8 million (ie, 10%) and I do believe jail time was warranted based on his illegal activity. He was afterall, a director at UBS which brings responsibility. Should other culpable actors also seen jail time? Of course. His arrogance was off putting. However, well done for having the courage to come forward.

I am giving 5 starts for the subject the book covers.It is important that the whole world knows how this corporate criminals together with millionaires are ripping off the citizens of their respective countries by not paying their taxes. Also is noted the criminal behaviour of banks and I believe not matter how many pieces of law are passed they will always be one step ahead.In terms of the author I personally do not believe he is a hero. He decided to spill the beans when he was crossed by the bank and get infuriated by all they did to him. What he did was taking revenge becoming a whistle blower.I personally believe he deserved his term in jail even when he opened Pandora's box. He was part of the criminal enterprise "willingly" and again, he only decided to take on them after the bank screwed him big time.Great reading.

Canning fruit allows me to enjoy some of summer's bounty during the long Midwestern winters, and making jam is the easiest type of canning there is. Jam sounds intimidating, but it is actually super simple and cheap to make. It's basically fruit, sweetener, and some kind of acid (like lemon juice or citric acid) simmered in a pot and then cooled.I picked up this jam cookbook to go beyond my usual repertoire of basic strawberry and apple jam. There are lots of creative recipes that make use of extracts and spices, such as Almond Strawberry and Baked Pear with cinnamon. I would never have thought of using pineapple or pumpkin to make jam, but it sounds delicious. I'm especially looking forward to trying the vanilla blueberry flavor next summer.As a health-conscious person, I appreciate that the book includes lots of sugar-free jams and also provides calorie information for each recipe.A quick note for jam-making beginners: This cookbook explains the basic process of canning jam in each recipe, but doesn't go into details about the equipment you'll need, etc. In order for jam to be shelf-stable it needs to be put into hot canning jars that are sealed and boiled. When I first started making jam, I didn't have any special tools and I had success with just keeping my cooled jam in the refrigerator. (Try this at your own risk and make sure to consume the jam quickly so it doesn't spoil.)Now that I know how easy it is to make jam from scratch, I don't think I'll ever buy it at the supermarket again. With this cookbook on hand, I can make gourmet jams that even fancy grocery stores don't carry.

I have been making jam for a couple of decades and l have never seen such a variety of recipes to choose from. All recipes are well laid out and easy to follow so even someone who has never made jam before would have no problem.

This one has sugar free recipes which is hard to find! And tons of great flavors and mixes of flavors. Great instructions as well, easy to follow.

Perfect recipes. I tried one right after reading through the book and it tasted great. First book i read on the subject so i think it was suitable for me as a beginner.
