This review applies to both this book and the necessary companion volume Campaigns https://www.amazon.com/GURPS-BASIC-SET-Campaigns-Universal/dp/1556347308GURPS is my favorite RPG system. As other reviewers state, the system can be extremely detailed, fine grained, and gritty. OR it can be streamlined for fast, cinematic, narrative play. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. GURPS Basic Set: Characters presents all you need for creating interesting characters, including simple systems for magic and psionics. The Campaigns volume presents detailed (but all pretty much optional) rules for combat and plenty of good advice for campaign building. GURPS is also very well supported as a system, with ample supplements for a wide variety of genres. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Great job, Steve Jackson Games!

I love GURPS. So much stuff. Rules for nearly any situation I could imagine and the tools to create my own when nothing else was applicable. Sounded perfect. And for the right GM it may be. For several years I've tried to make this the game that would replace D&D and similar D20 (and other single die) systems. Well, it did replace them. But I was left feeling like I'd forgotten something. I'd forgotten how to have fun. Don't misunderstand, GURPS is fun. Far more so than D&D could imagine. But I was buried under the weight of my own expectations as a GM. And running games for my college's RPG Club made the situation worse. I was trying to introduce new players to the game all while I was barely keeping it together.I've realized that the game I want to PLAY is GURPS, but it's not one I can GM effectively - at least, not to my own expectations (my players give me much positive feedback, so maybe I'm being silly). I'm going to try Fate Accelerated and see if that's a better fit as GM.Maybe I'll be able to _play_ GURPS someday. It's the system I wish I'd paid attention to 25 years ago. It's not for everyone and it takes a good GM to tune this engine - I'm just not that guy right now.If you like details and rules to handle most anything in any genre, this is your game - hands down.I'm trying simpler systems for when I GM, but I'm always hoping to find someone local that runs GURPS. If you're looking at GURPS for your main game, know that it's the most amazing (and potentially overwhelming) toolkit for tabletop gaming you could imagine. You've been warned.

I am incredibly excited to be learning the GURPS system. I know I'm getting into it close to a decade after the fourth edition toolkits were first published and two decades after GURPS' zenith in popularity, but for someone who likes to blend genres (medieval characters in a sci-fi setting, for instance, or cyberpunk/horror/espionage all blended into one) no other system seems to come close to addressing that need. My only concern is whether or not for edition wound up being as well supported as seems to have initially been promised: there is still no vehicle creation kit, no consolidated bestiary, and it looks like I'll be porting a lot of third edition material over to fourth edition rules myself … which may require picking up the third edition basic toolkits ouch … although the sheer wealth of such available material, third edition worldbooks etc., is impressive. I'm still getting my feet wet, but so far I have no regrets!

I started playing GURPS with my friends recently. As such I ordered my own set of the basic 4th Ed rules. I've only had them a few days, but am really happy with the quailty. This is a hardbound book with good quality and feel pages. I've thumbed through it presently and like the are and feel of the book. I'll try to post back in 2 months letting anyone know how it has held up for the near term. I'm expecting no issues.

If you want the actual rules (minus the character creation part) you'll want to purchase the GURPS Basic Set Campaigns book, which this book references extensively.GURPS endeavors to give gamers the tools necessary to create literally ANY roleplaying experience imaginable. With only a few cartoonish exceptions, it feels as though Steve Jackson has succeeded with his game system.The GURPS system uses only three six-sided dice (d6's) for most of the rolls you will be making, and encourages you to make use only of the rules you feel comfortable in order to make your game as streamlined or intricate as desired.Character stats, rather than being randomized, are purchased with a point system, as are skills and attributes pertaining to your character. This actively replaces the leveling system familiar to most other RPG's, in that you don't have a level 15 Cleric, but rather a 1750 point character that has purchased traits that a cleric would have, with no penalty if he/she wanted to dabble in magery or barbarism as needed in the future.Attributes (advantages or disadvantages) range from the mundane (Honesty) to the fantastic (Unkillable) and many rely heavily on Game Master approval. When generating or upgrading a character, advantageous traits can be purchased for points and disadvantages will reward you extra points, so I imagine a lot of power gamers giving their characters a fear of the dark so that they can also be able to fly or something.Units in the game are given in real world terms, and so combat "rounds" actually last one second each, and moving distance is given in yards. The game is also set up so that most of the calculation is done during character creation, and so everything is spelled out on your character record ahead of time.All in all, it's a very well thought out gaming system. I can't wait to try making a Flatworld-themed campaign using it!

Do not buy the "Gold Edition!" This is NOT the complete book. It is missing the last half of the book. There are 14 chapters in On The Origin Of Species. This book abruptly ends mid-sentence on the first page of chapter 9.

Such an important foundational book that changed the course of the world and laid foundation to many new branches of science... but I have to admit the way Darwin writes is a bit difficult to slog through. But an insight I was able to gain throughout my reading is how different the popular and scientific climate must have been during Darwin time. Once I realized Origins was meant to be as much a persuasive text at can be and at least partly aimed at producing counterargument to his many dissenters at the time, the repetitions and many detailed examples made a lot more sense in context... Still the verbose style of writing makes it kind of dense.

Darwin wrote a great book. It deserves to be treated properly and that does not happen in this Kindle edition. It s full of mistakes to the point of often being confusing and unintelligible. it is clear that no human being ever looked at the output that became the Kindle.At $0.99 it is wildly overpriced.

This is pretty difficult to read, not because of the language or sentence structure which is surprisingly easy, but because of the content. So I am glad I purchased the $0.99 version. While the contents are the works of a genius of his time, it was difficult for me to force myself through the pages and pages observations of the ants and plants, and bugs, and doves to get to his famous theories and summaries. I do understand that this wasn't intended to be read casually, but given it's importance in history I wanted to give it a go. Just realize it can be difficult to get through.

This "150th Anniversary Edition" seems to be simply a reprint of the 100th Anniversary Edition. In particular, the forward by Julian Huxley was written in 1958 and while it is still mostly relevant, it has dated badly in a few places.The main text is Darwin's 6th Edition.Darwin considerably amended Origin of Species through the course of its six editions. For example he first used the expression "survival of the fittest" (coined by Herbert Spencer) in the 5th edition and he first used the term "evolution" in the 6th edition. However, he also diluted some of his arguments in an attempt to deflect criticism. Most notably he made more allowance for now discredited Lamarckian ideas of hereditable affects of use and disuse, versus pure natural selection.It is an open argument whether the 1st edition or the 6th edition best represents his real thinking. My 2 cents would be that the differences are relatively minor in the context of the overall work. The key driving ideas are well expressed in both and either is a fine start. Just be aware that other readers of Origin of Species may have seen a slightly different text!

Darwin was somewhat of a genius, some things he was so ahead of the time but other things we now know we're completely wrong. I am reading this book along with The Descent of Man to account for the dangerous rhetoric that these works contributed to racism and to Hitler and many other white supremacy groups. To say 1 people are less evolve than another opens a floodgate that has been proven to be completely untrue. Man is one, skin color is and hair are minute and genetically speaking it is proven we descend from 2 common ancestors and so do many others. Variation is within, but the common ancestor had to be black or brown.

And, surprisingly, it's not hard to read at all. Darwin was not a scientist: he was a naturalist, an observer of nature, and that's what makes his work not only commendable but also very approachable.For me, everything he explains about descent through modification and rudimentary organs and common ancestors not only makes sense but is corroborated by the principles of Biology concerning classification and evolution.Darwin, contrary to how creationists reacted and are still reacting towards him, does not confront the idea of "God created everything out of nothing" and dismisses it as nonsense (except maybe a little towards the end, when he writes "Do they really believe that atoms have been commanded suddenly to flash into living tissues?"). He takes more of a perplexed approach and doesn't seem to understand why they can't look at the facts.*** A note on the free Kindle edition: it does seem abridged and does not include the chart that the author refers to on several occasions but the gist of natural selection is in here***

I am reviewing, specifically, the Harvard paperback facsimile printing of the 1859 first edition of Darwin's masterpiece.This is a very handsome edition of one of the most important books ever written, measured in terms of its impact on humanity. The book is an exact reprint of the 1859 first edition; it is a handy size, and though the paper is more like newspaper grade and could be higher quality, I was actually pleased that it was not too stiff and will allow opening without breaking the spine. (I really do not like cheap paperbacks that almost require you to break the spine to read the book, and then pages begin falling out.) All around, this is a very useful edition, if not a bit overpriced.Of course, in terms of the content, it is a real bargain. You get Darwin's original, unpolished work in all its offensive, revolutionary glory. The introduction by Ernst Mayr is a special treat, as well, explaining the importance of the work.Five stars!

Garbage Pail KidsThe "Garbage Pail Kids" were just a memory in my mind, and my surprise was to find them in AMAZON, as a child was one of my greatest treasures, which I am happy to have a piece of my past, in my hands. THANK YOU.Recommended for all fan RETRO definitely a very special collection "jewel".

Excellent! The first five series of Garbage Pail Kids are represented here (206 images in all). Like other reviews have mentioned, the backs of the cards aren't shown, and that's disappointing, but I can live without them. The artwork is slightly enlarged (compared to the original cards), so the images are easier to enjoy. The colors are crisp and vibrant. This is a well produced book. I wish the remaining GPK series cards were immortalized in a follow up book. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

As a childhood GPK fan, this is a solid and extremely enjoyable release! The artwork is crystal clear and the colors really pop. The only thing missing is the artwork from each card's back, and it's a real shame it's not been included. Perhaps Topps can release a GPK Card Trader app (like their incredible STAR WARS release) in which the fronts and backs of each card can be viewed. Here's to hoping this book is a hit for them and future volumes can be released.

I have been collecting GPK cards since I was 11 (I'm 43 now), I have over 1,000 not counting duplicates. I have the first 3 original series complete. This book is excellent. I can show my son these wonderful cards without risking damage to my collection. The pages are high quality glossy paper. On the bottom of each page it shows you the alternate names for each card the (B) cards. There is an index in the back. To top it all off, you get 4 limited edition cards with the book. If you love GPK cards, this book is a must!

My parents would not let me buy Garbage Pail Kids stickers when I was growing up. Consequently, I was fascinated by them. Anything my parents didn't want me to have - GPK, Big League Chew, Stephen King books - must've been really amazing. I saw this book featured on TV last week and knew I had to have it, if for no other reason than to gratify the child-of-the-80s in me who lusted after these sticker cards from afar.Garbage Pail Kids was a spoof of the Cabbage Patch kids produced by Topps, and created by Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the Holocaust graphic novel, Maus. They were irreverent, creative, and really, really gross. Now, Abrams ComicArts and Spiegelman have released a hardcover book showcasing the first five of the 15 series produced by Topps. Each card, 206 in all, is given its own page, scanned from the original art, nice and big to give you a better glimpse than you've ever had of these truly beautifully disgusting kids. A very nice, informative introduction by Spiegelman and an afterword by artist John Pound round out the book.It's a very nicely-produced book, with many very clever touches. The dust jacket is made from the same waxy material the card packs were originally wrapped in. The actual boards feature a minimalistic photo of the chalk-like gum stick that came in every pack. Four rare, never-before-released cards are included, as well.I have only two complaints. One is that the card backs are not included, apparently not considered to be of the same artistic merit as the card faces. I tend to think they were an equally important part of what made GPK great, so they are missed. My other complaint is that the book features only the first 5 series - 1/3 of the total art produced. These complaints are enough to knock off a half-star, but I've given a 5-star rating out of respect for Spiegelman and in the hopes that a positive reaction from the masses is enough to compel Topps and Abrams to release additional volumes. I would love to eventually have the full set on my shelf. Then I can finally thumb my nose at my parents and my inner child will sleep soundly for the first time.

I have fond memories of the 80's. So many toys in the early 80's, secret wars, super powers, Star Wars, g.i. Joe, transformers, voltron, thundercats, he-man, ect. One of the long forgotten collectibles of the 80's were these cards, the garbage pail kids. I remember my mom getting me pack for a quarter, chewing that hard pink bubble gum stick that came in the pack, and putting together and album in number order of all the gross boys and girls that were offered up in this set. That was almost thirty years ago. When I saw this book I had to have it and take a walk down memory lane with the garbage pail kids. If you grew up collecting these, make room on your e-reader, ipad, tablet whatever and do yourself a favor and download this book. You won't be disappointed. You're guaranteed to break out in laughter and you can show the younger generation what real entertainment was before we had a World Wide Web and Nintendo 3ds in our hands.

I love this book!! So nostalgic in nature. It took me back in time to a more youthful time in my life. I loved GPK cards as a kid and when I found out recently they still made them, I got bit by the bug again. I now own all the complete life work Garbage Pail Kids sticker card from OS1-15, ANS1-7, FB1-3 & BNS1 at the writing of this review on 12-18-12. A must buy coffee table book for anyone wanting a conversation starter piece or for anyone at all interested in Garbage Pail Kids. This book has a short intro, then a handful of pages of background and then finally the rest of the book is a blown up picture of the first few series of cards, one on each page with the A/B alternate. Very informative and a good reference manual for the GPK collector or novice collector barely getting into collecting GPK cards. Good Luck!!
