Gr 2–6—Following Grandfather Gandhi, this title finds young Arun at his grandfather's ashram, or "service village." Slightly older now, the boy is working to adhere to the 11 vows of ashram living. Not wasting is the most difficult for him, and he has trouble understanding how this vow relates to nonviolence. Three incidents combine to help Arun learn the lesson. He accompanies his grandfather (Bapuji) on a trip and listens as he tells a crowd, "When nonviolence is accepted as the law of life, it must pervade the whole being and not be applied to isolated acts." On the way home, Arun tosses away a pencil stub. When Bapuji finds out, he sends Arun back in the dark to retrieve it, saying, "It is not the pencil, but you, that is important," meaning that Arun's grandfather loves him enough to hold him accountable. The third way that Grandfather teaches Arun is by helping him make a "tree of violence," a chart on the wall that shows how seemingly small actions or thoughts can lead to larger events. The illustrations, especially the visualization of Arun's tree, help children understand the weighty concepts. As he adds to it each day, it grows beyond the physical walls, dwarfing Bapuji and Arun and demonstrating that each decision takes a person on a particular path. Somehow I expected this to be a somewhat kinky listing of snake oil products. To my surprise, this is a solid treatise on first, maintaining good health to keep the male libido functioning at a high level and using sound foods that science has been shown to have benefit on the various body functions that support the libido. I felt as though I had been given a lecture by a medical and nutrition specialist, though much more enjoyable. The foods here, with very few exceptions, are found in the local supermarket. Buy increasing consumption, men can greatly benefit their libidos, without hardly noticing a change in their diet. Well done. I think men and women would find this book very enlightening.

Hey,guys! Shhh... Feeling low? Then read this book!It contains a list of common and exotic libido enhancing foods to try and ways to consume them. Tom also discusses the harmful effects of some foods / supplements which can harm your sexual performance.A very instructive book.

This book contains an exhaustive list of aphrodisiacs. Some are the common ones that everyone has heard of, but there are a number which I was completely unfamiliar with. It even includes several recipes at the end, which is a really nice touch.

This book has a refreshing take in that the author states right up front that there are no shortcuts to getting results. It reviews several of the "well known" aphrodisiacs such as oysters and chocolate, but there are some surprises here as well. The next few chapters delve into lesser known food products and spices with aphrodisiac qualities. Quite interesting with good, actionable advice.

I knew many of these, but have to admit there were a lot I have never heard of either, like asafetida or maca. One thing I liked about Tom Shaw's book is that he's very clear in saying that there isn't one instant solution, or one solution that fits everyone. Every person is different, so what works for one may not work for the other. Experimentation is key to success with this.Some of the aphrodisiacs mentioned were very common, like ginger or pepper. Others were more exotic and I'm not even sure where to look for them. The section on Super Aphrodisiacs that give a big boost was a good read. Still, I'd prefer to try the more common ones first, going for the super ones if all else fails. There is such a long list of great herbs and spices here to try, and ways to consume them. The section on foods that can harm your sexual performance and libido was a good read too.It's wonderful that Tom pointed out that these are helpful in increasing a man's libido, but a healthy diet and exercise go a long way too.Overall a really good read with many, many helpful tips. Don't miss the Bonus recipes at the end. I haven't tried them yet but they look really yummy!

Solid handbook with a good overview of vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices and their historic uses as a aphrodisiac. I always find these facts interesting. Many of these items are easily found in every supermarket -- it won't hurt to add these foods to your diet ;) The book also contains a section about super aphrodisiacs, for the folks who want more.. But all in all the book stresses that a healthy diet is important, for your body and your libido. With the male libido decreasing after a certain age, following these food recommendations -all healthy foods- will do your body good in any case and perhaps with some additional benefits for the romantic times.I was happy to see a recipe section at the end. I always enjoy trying out new recipes.

The description of the dynamic behavior of piezoelectric multilayered bending actuators is effected on the basis of Lagrange‘s formalism and Hamilton‘s principle. The achieved insights are used for the systematic development of the electromechanical circuit representation within the scope of the network theory for any design of piezoelectric bending actuators. The applications of piezoelectric multilayer beam bending actuators can be extended by means of special displacement sensors allowing for the compensation of effects such as hysteresis, creep and drift being typical for piezoelectric actuators. Within the scope of the presented book, two different sensor-actuator-systems are presented being based on an integrated capacitive and inductive displacement sensor, respectively. Analytical simulations of the static and dynamic behavior are compared to real measurement results of a specially developed piezoelectric multilayer beam bender. Here, the suitability of the developed theoretical aspects is shown in an outstanding way.

About the Author

Rüdiger G. Ballas was born in 1971 in Blieskastel, Germany. After finishing education as an assistant in physics at the Technical School for Natural Sciences Ludwigshafen, Germany, he received the diploma in microsystemtechnology in 1999 from the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern, Germany. From 1999 until 2001 he worked with Tele Quarz in Neckarbischofsheim, Germany, where he was head of the group concerning microstructuring of AT-quartz crystals and development of high-frequency inverted MESA-quartzes. From 2001 until 2006 he worked as a Ph.D. student at Darmstadt University of Technology in the field of piezoelectric bending multilayer actuators with integrated sensors for tip deflection measurements. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2006 from Darmstadt University of Technology. His actual research fields are theoretical mechanics, electromechanical system theory and modeling of the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuators.

If you read only one book on Afghanistan this year, this book is the one to read. Insightful and unbiased, the author has no political agenda except to help the reader understand the Afghan people and the reasons for America's continued involvement in what has become Afghanistan's ongoing civil war. It answers the question "Why?" behind such events as our alliance with Pakistan and our continued support for Karzai's corrupt government. It also makes the significant point that the dynamics of the northern section of the country (consisting of Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, and other minorities) are very different from the southern Pashtun provinces, and it would be a mistake to assume there is a "one size fits all" solution to ending the war. Although the reader is presented with some unpleasant facts, the author is optimistic that a peaceful solution is possible.

An excellent guide and first hand account of how we became intertwined with Afghanistan. Williams presents a brief, but concise history before presenting his own experiences and interviews with those who helped shape a nation almost perpetually invaded by its neighbors.

Fantastic book written from years of experience and travel ; what more could you want. I had the pleasure to take a few of professor Brian Williams classes and cannot a comparative teacher at his level of knowledge with teaching ability.

I approached this book with a bit hesitation expecting a dense jumble of facts, figures, political quagmire & a long drawn out yawn. Except for the latter it is indeed what I expected but so well written that the stories are engaging, the facts memorable & revealing, the figures fascinating & the quagmire just that. I am a likely target for this book as the good Dr explains in his intro. I have had the only basic knowledge & news-fed ideas of Afghanistan & the war, but after reading Dr William's book I have a much greater appreciation for the immense complexities of the Muslim tribal influences, the geographical constraints & the enormous task of creating a balanced, stable & modern civilization in a region that has historically been a giant clusterF.I'd encourage anyone with even the idlest of passing interest in Afghanistan & its stormy present & past to pick this book up without hesitation.

The title is misleading. The first 124 of 239 pages (first three chapters) deal with the ethnic makeup of the country, the geography, and how Afghanistan developed into a country. Nothing classified there. The book only provides three maps. It was confusing reading so much about the geography, the different provinces, and the ethnic makeup only having three black and white maps to refer to. The following chapter gives a very brief history of major events in Afghanistan including the Soviet invasion, the Afghan civil war and the rise of the Taliban. This is where the book begins to mention the US and information that was at one time classified but released 20 years ago. This chapter covers nearly 30 years of Afghan history along with US, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan involvement in less than 50 pages. If you are looking to read this period of Afghan history in detail refer to Ghost Wars: by Steve Coll. If you are looking to read into detail about the Taliban check out Taliban by Ahmed Rashid. The final chapter covers the U.S. War in Afghanistan. If you are looking to read more in detail on this check out The Longest War by Peter L. Bergen because this book leaves a lot of details out. Point being, this book lacked many important historical details that happened thoughout the 1970s into 2011 that led to why the U.S. is currently bogged down in Afghanistan.I began questioning the legitimacy of the author's book when I read on page 102 Mullah Omar wearing the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad being "donned for the first time in recorded history." This is untrue. It has been recorded in history as being worn before, for example, by Kind Dost Muhammad Khan in 1834. That fact can be found in In the Graveyard of Empires by Seth G. Jones. Even Rashid mentions in his book that the cloak was out of its tomb 60 years prior to Mullah Omar wearing it. There is a part in the book were he mentions US troops not being involved enough throughout the local Afghan villages in the countryside. Please refer to The Wrong War by Bing West to dispute this statement. There is also no notes section or bibliography in this book. The book constantly repeats information thoughout it as if it was copied and pasted. There are also spelling and punctuation errors that found throughout it.

I read this book in just two days, it reads like a novel it is so well written. For anyone who has read the Kite Runner, Three Cups of Tea etc. or just wants to know what we are doing in this country, this book fills in all the blanks. Each chapter begins with one of the author's own adventures in Afghanistan, like living with pagan mountaineers, working with the US army, or traveling with an Afghan warlord. Then the subsequent chapter explores topics like Afghanistan's various warring ethnic groups, the history of the Soviet invasion, and the history of US warfare in this country since 9/11, ancient history etc. You don't have to be a specialist to really get sucked into this easy read. Williams obviously loves this beautiful but tragic country and you will too after you've read it. You also understand what we are there fighting for and how we are (and aren't!) following in the footsteps of previous invaders. Cool photos and maps too.

Michael S. Gazzaniga is Distinguished Professor and Director of the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Mangun is Professor of Psychology and Neurology in the Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego. This book is terrible. Where do I start? This is basically a book of a woman complaining "woe is me", throwing herself a pity party. She blames everyone else for her problems and doesn't accept any responsibility for her terrible decisions. First of all, this book promised what it didn't deliver. From the Amazon description: "Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them." Nope. There is no glimpse at "upper-middle" class other than her judging her clients for being "sad" or "smoking cigarettes" when she smokes herself.Secondly, she doesn't provide a look into the poverty in America. She doesn't recognize herself coming from a place of privilege as a white, American woman. She was afforded opportunities that other marginalized groups may not have received. She describes some of her greatest "sacrifices" as being her daughter not being able to get "organic" milk on the WIC program and her daughter's only "organic" foods were Annie's macaroni and cheese. Really? There are many, many, many Americans that can barely afford groceries and would be thankful to have any milk or food for the week, much less being choosy about ensuring it was "organic". She seems to lament that she can't be a "stay at home mom" which the majority of Americans can't afford. The "stay at home mom" role is something that very few can afford. That isn't a mark of "poverty". Many families have both parents who work, that isn't something "special" or sympathy inducing. Then there is the accident in which she pulled off on the median of a highway and leaves her daughter in the car seat while she walks along the highway looking for a $5 doll. Then she refuses to accept any blame or her role in the accident. She complains about not getting paid to drive to the jobs she works....um....do any of us get paid for our commute?She then gets $4,000 back in a tax refund, which is annoying within itself, but then instead of saving the money and building her future, she buys herself a diamond ring? What?? Her daughter is suffering health consequences from black mold, yet she doesn't nothing about that...no, instead, she wants diamonds.She is so full of self-pity the book is hard to read. One of the most important components of a book is to have a likable main character in which the reader can sympathize with and roots for their success. I tried, but I couldn't make myself root for her. I can't believe this book made its way through an agent, editor and publishing house and became a featured book on Amazon. Did any of them read this first? Super disappointing.

Giving this any sort of bad review almost seems like it would be an act of spite, given the circumstances Stephanie Land is writing from - but still, for the first third of the book I really wasn't liking it, and I couldn't put my finger on why.But at about the halfway point, I realized I had been bait-and-switched - this is not a story of a "maid." It's the story of a working, poor, single mother, dealing with a variety of problems both self-inflicted and beyond her control who *happens* to be a maid. But that's a harder elevator pitch so I understood why "maid" became the focus. But I don't think that's really the book.When I changed my focus to the book I realized it actually was I appreciated it a lot more. At that point, I could look at this as a window to this life. Yes, Stephanie Land is often self-pitying and finds confrontation and judgement around every corner - but of course she would. Her relations with her daughter's father is not good, and she's unable to find a really solid boyfriend, because of course she can't. She wishes for a better life and probably misprioritizes things in the moment instead of thinking long-term, because of course she would.That's the hustle and grind of this life - everything is working against her. I don't believe that in every checkout line she went through she got a hard time from people standing behind her, or the checkout person - but I do believe that it felt that way to her. I don't necessarily think she was exploited by her employers quite as badly as she describes - but I'm sure she felt she was. When you're in this situation, everything is exaggerated and every bit of bad luck is magnified. That's an interesting book - harsh and hard - but interesting. Reading it in that lens made it successful in a different way then the title that had originally misdirected me.I had to go on unemployment once (well, I didn't have too - I was laid off, and it was my right), and it's like going into another mirror universe - society's respect you took for granted is suddenly upended. You're no longer seen as a responsible member of society who can be trusted to be self-reliant. You're a liar, a rube, a sap who can't write a resume. Everything becomes lowest common denominator - the assumption is you're a grifter who's trying to get one over, or an idiot who has to be talked too like a child. I could see very easily how someone in that situation long-term could quickly stop caring about honesty or integrity because the people on the other side assume the worst. I hated it, hated myself, and it was only six weeks.So *of course* Stephanie Land is defensive and self-pitying at times, because society is expecting her to be. That's the role the working poor play - we feel bad for them, toss them some baseball tickets now and then, and make sure they know we're better than they are.When I read her book THAT way, it all came into focus. This is not a book about a maid - it's the book about a life when the only job you can find is being a maid. In that way, it is valuable - because somebody needs to tell that story, and the only way to tell it is if you live it. Even Barbara Ehrenreich's famous "Nickel and Dimed" was sort of a grift - she just pretended for awhile. Great writing, but an act. Stephanie Land isn't acting, so the occasional self-pity and various poor decisions are all part of that real life. It's not that poor people have especially bad luck, it's that they can't easily recover from even sort of bad luck.So - don't look at the title and think it's a book about maids. Think of it as a look into the world of the working poor that most of us look past and hope we never encounter in our own lives. Nobody wants to hold up a line to deal with food stamps, and all the clowns who say "you're welcome" and act like food stamps are being lifted out of their own pockets, should hope and pray the situation never reverses.To digress on the subjects of maids. I was in a big hotel in Mobile, Alabama once and I was getting ice from the bucket or whatever I was doing, and I walked by the maid's station and the group was in a conference. It was probably a dozen African-American women doing their meeting before the day's shift - most of them were young in typical maid uniforms, but there were two older women in business casual leading the meeting. I realized (or at least assumed) that these two women had probably been on staff for years, working up through those ranks. This was their kingdom; I had to think, back in their neighborhoods, they controlled everything - who could get a job at this nice hotel, where it probably was a good place to work, taking calls from mothers trying to get their daughters that opportunity, no doubt laying down the false compliments amid the desperation. How would they choose? I thought of all the compromises they had to make to get to that level of responsibility - all the customers they had to put up with, the managers who probably disrespected them, the owners who looked past them, all to get to this morning meeting. I want to read that book.So I left a very good tip in the room when I left, for some woman I never saw. I think I did. I've told myself I did. I'm a nice guy so I'm sure I did. All white, middle-class Americans are very nice. We're happy to give you $10 tips and free baseball tickets. Just don't hold us up in the checkout line with your food stamps and your crying kid.

This just rubbed me the wrong way. I do think that it is of the greatest importance for people to learn more about what it is like to live in poverty and how one gets there. Happily, there are many excellent books that are relevant here: $2 a Day, Evicted, Both Hands Tied, and Ehrenreich’s book come quickly to mind. There are also a very, very good five-part podcast on poverty (co-produced by On the Media and some one else, probably in 2016), and a couple of sympathetic and illuminating books about payday lenders.I have read all of those books (and quite a few others), and would recommend any of them rather than Maid. Maid is not a terrible book. But neither is it a good one. I was often frustrated by what certainly seemed like obtuseness or lack of insight on the part of this author.

I love this hiking book. I use it constantly throughout the year. I find the ratings accurate and the directions updated. I usually shave off a half hour to an hour on the time it takes to hike but it depends on your physical ability.

My kiddos are so taken with the first two BigFoot books, and they couldn't be more tickled about the release of these newest titles! These books are our go-to car books--they keep they by their seat and can look at them for hours. I love how they mix seek-and-find with cool facts and learning opps--PERFECT for making learning fun!

I love that this book combines fun with educational. My 11 year old son enjoys reading the various facts about landmarks while also doing the seek & find parts of the book. I’ll be getting him another BigFoot book for his stocking at Christmas!

I have just moved to Reno and this book was on my hit list so I can understand and get acquainted with the area as soon as possible. This book is has been a great tool. In the short time I've been here I've seen/done/been to a few of these places referenced and the author describes them exactly. This man knows Reno/Tahoe. I can see me using this book for many years. The only thing I am a bit disappointed in is the amount of restaurants he reviewed. To be fair, there are many, many choices but it does seem that the coverage was a bit less than I would like. I guess I could just try them myself. In summary, very good book and extremely valuable for inside information on Reno/Tahoe.

I have been a long time visitor to Lake Tahoe and knew the north shore pretty well. This book opened my eyes to a lot of new places to visit on my last trip. I liked how the sections were broken out, including activities for families/kids. My wife and I went to lovely restaurant listed, Lone Eagle Grill, and thoroughly enjoyed it.There is another section for day trips that was also of great insight as we traveled to Truckee for the day. I certainly have picked out other day trips and activities for future return visits. I would highly recommend this book if you are looking to expand your list of activities in the Tahoe area.

We bought this book as a guide for a family trip to Tahoe. We had never been and knew little about the area. This book is so poorly organized that I hardly opened it once we got to Tahoe. I ended up using the internet more than the book. I use travel guides frequently and have never found one so difficult to use. It is basically just lists that are organized for each city (Reno, North Tahoe, South Tahoe, Sparks) There are no "Insider" tips on what is worthwhile or any useful information about how to organize your time in Tahoe etc.

I look forward utilizing it during my trip to Reno. It seems thorough with a plethora of information.

We got this updated edition because we were moving to Reno and had to have the latest scoop on all the information this book holds, and it holds a lot of information. It has been a tremendous help, but lacks maps.

This book is very helpful and full of information, however I was disappointed that a book about such a gorgeous place had no pictures of the places it was describing. I was bummed, but I'm over it now. At least there's one on the cover!
