One of the downsides to the more technical and classical approach to oil painting, is that you rarely get to see someone work through an entire multi-session painting, let alone explain their objectives, struggles, and ideas along the way. Patrick Jones gives us the chance to experience this entire process for quite a number of his paintings, and it is incredibly enlightening. This book is narrow in focus, which does a great job of reinforcing the most important points about Patrick's painting process The actual subjects of the paintings are superfluous, as the techniques can be applied to any subject, so long as you are interested in this particular painting methodology. I highly recommend this book, it is very informative, and quite motivating.Who this book is for.- Someone interested in a structured, and classical oil painting technique that take a lot of time over many sessions, but yield realistic results that leverage the unique properties of oil paints.Who this book is not for.- Someone exclusively interested in direct or alla prima painting techniques. Stylized approaches to painting that leverage the texture of thick paints, and don't lend themselves well to layering.There is material in this book that is universal to all painters, but the vast majority of this book is highly focused on a particular method of oil painting. I definitely don't want to tell anyone they shouldn't get this book, just know what you are in for before you purchase it. These same techniques could be carried over to acrylics as well, though it would require some adaptation.
Awesome book on techniques, showing step by step sampling. I've read a couple of reviews that were obtuse about the use of scantily clad women (some call them bare naked, but those apparently aren't actually looking at the detail) and are obviously not judging the work on any viable criteria--such as color choice, blending, glazing or layering. If you expect to see fantasy art without revealing suits (on men and women), you're new to the genre. Likewise, if you expect to see art without traces of either Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo inspiration in them. Jones's use of color is purely his own. As you look at his work, his style becomes more and more apparent. Yes it has nods to those who inspired him, just as Frazetta's work nods at N.C. Wyeth, Franklin Booth, Howard Pyle and so many others. Jones knows the traditional techniques, tells a poignant story with each subject, and shows your nearly every single step to achieve your own style with these techniques. I prize this book as much as my Loomis books.
Having met Patrick through Facebook, his art has mesmerized me since the first time my eyes gazed upon it.After purchasing and reading, "Sci-Fi & Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques by Patrick J. Jones", I was intrigued further.Patrick's need to create has inspired me like no other painting "reference" book has inspired me to date.His mentors include grand masters like Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo.From his organic use of materials, to his incredibly strong compositions, Patrick's skill and artistry help to create an amalgamation of technique and artistic mastery. He walks you through his thought processes, discussing the pros and cons as well as the subtle differences changing your perspective and palette can make. The color and quality of the reference photographs in the book are beautiful. Patrick also includes many great references and ideas for further research. I would highly recommend it as an easy book to follow as well as an ideal book for any collection.***Love that he participates and mentions my favorite group, The Frazetta Round Table, too.
I have been a fan of Patrick j. Jones for a while now, and when he noted on his Facebook page he was releasing a novel I hit the ceiling with excitement. I finally received my copy after having it shipped directly to my school where I'm an oil painting major. The book is actually very large and beautifully printed (my class mates saw the cover and kept asking what I was reading) inside Patrick touches on an often overlooked subject with young illustrators....thr importancr of life drawing. Each section cover a different painting, and you are given an infepth look at each piece from thumbnail to the final brush stroke. If you want to be a fantasy illustrator, or just enjoy the art this is the book for you. I can think of no other books on painting by current fantasy illustrators, that are as well done as this one. BUY THIS BOOK!
Have to say This is better than I expected patrick jones is an amazing artist. I expected someone who copies the greats but not found hiw own style but i was wrong and he is his own artist sure you can see the Boris Vallejo influence but hes no clone. I spoken to Frank Frazetta several times ans he always stated not to be his clone. This is the book we all wanted Frazetta or Vallejo to write but never did. Great Job.
I am a professional illustrator, fantasy, science fiction. I'm not trying to troll Patrick's book here, but to present some bonafides. I've read a lot of painting and technique books over the years. And Patrick Jones rates right up at the top of those. His breakdown of his process is not going to fit every painter out there. He and I make marks very different. But the information is still valid and useful. On my last painting, which looked nothing like Patrick's superlative work (I must admit I am not as proficient as a paint slinger), I had his book open, near my painting, checking every once in awhile on some small thing he mentioned. I really cannot give higher praise than that to an art book. There have been very few art books that I have been has excited to have read than Patrick's. And his notes on medium was worth the purchase to me alone.
