Review

“Children who have yet to discover Claude, the small, plump dog with the nifty red beret, and his sidekick, Sir Bobblysock (who is both a sock and quite bobbly), are in for a delight…. [W]hen they venture into a winter wonderland, mayhem and hilarity ensues.”“The new book in the series may be the sweetest surrealist children’s book ever published… [I]t’s hard not to love a main character who wears a one-man-band outfit to the library, in case he finds a very exciting book.”“Humorous red-accented illustrations, an amusing storytelling style, and quirky plots will continue to delight Claude’s fans.”

British author/illustrator Alex T. Smith returns with a winter-themed addition to his beginning reader series about the adventures of a genial dog named Claude and his best friend Sir Bobblysock (yes, Sir Bobblysock is actually a sock, an unusual sidekick--or perhaps it makes sense since dogs love to chew socks?) This is the fourth book in the series. In Claude on the Slopes, we are introduced to Claude, a small, plump dog who wears shoes, a sweater and "a rather nifty beret," and resides with Mr. and Mrs. Shinyshoes and his best friend Sir Bobblysock at 112 Waggy Avenue. In each book, Claude and Sir Bobblysock take off on adventures. One day they go to the library, where they visit Miss Hush, the librarian, who has to remind Claude to use his "nice Indoor voice." Claude is in for a real adventure when he experiences snow for the first time, and winds up at a winter sports center, where he experiences snowball fights, sledding, and snow sculpture and skiing. When he forgets he's not supposed to use his loud outdoor voice out in the snow and accidentally triggers an avalanche, his magic beret, which seems to hold everything you can need, helps Claude save the day. This beginning reader is perfect for fans of gentle humor such as Poppleton by Cynthia Rylant or the Amanda pig series by Jean van Leeuwen. The cartoon-style artwork, done in black, white, grey and red, adds to the humor of the stories. As is typical with beginning readers, the author uses a format of brief chapters which can be read independently if a child is not yet ready to read the entire book at one sitting. The book would also make an amusing read-aloud, although the small size of the volume make it better suited for reading with a small group than a classroom.

The Story-Claude the dog lives at 112 Waggy Avenue along with his best friend Sir Bobblysock. One day Claude opens his front door to see the world covered in white. It's his first sight of snow. Together Claude and his friend find their way to a mountain where they learn all about sledding, snowballs and avalanches. My Thoughts-This is a seriously cute book that both child and adult will love. On the child's side, Claude is an adventurous dog who wears a magic beret. This nifty beret left me in fits, reminding me of Mary Poppins carpet bag. What fun for a child's imagination? So great. The book is done in a black, white and red color scheme that works. Somehow the author/illustrator is able to capture the perfect expressions on the character's faces, especially Claude's smug looks. The author's European roots shine through as Claude loves his tea and fashion. Claude dazzles wherever he goes and learns all about the many things that can be done with snow.As an adult this book cracked me up. There are so many inside jokes that had me snorting. I really liked the fact the Sir Bobblysock had a bunion. I could read this book over and over to my kids. 4 stars for Claude!

**Thank you Peachtree and Netgalley for providing this in exchange for an honest review**Claude is a happy dog. He lives with Mr. & Mrs. Shinyshoes and his very best friend, Sir Bobblysock. Every day, after the Shinyshoes have left, Claude and Sir Bobblysock have an adventure. The adventure for today has to do with all the fun thing you can do with snow.I loved this book. Everything about it is pure delightfulness. The story is well written and engaging. The characters are lovable. My favorite thing by far were the illustrations. The pictures themselves are fantastic. The color scheme is simple. White, black, and varying shades of grey, red, and blue. I know that doesn't sound very imaginative, but trust me, it works beautifully.I would recommend this to everyone. Yes, even adults.

Claude on the Slopes by Alex T Smith is the book that you might not want to share with your dog. Claude has the kind of day adventures that I’m sure that they wish they could have and might become jealous. LOL Sharing with children on the other hand will make for a delightful time. Though I’m also sure that Claude has the kind of day adventures that they would like to take with their dogs. It’s fun and games no matter what they are doing.Truly the book is written for the young at heart with its whimsical way. Along the way you can learn some lessons with Claude and Sir Bobbysock on the what can happen when you are being too boisterous.Longer than most quick reading stories, but I found it held the children’s interest with the many illustrations and humorous storyline.Copy provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
