About the Author

Sports Illustrated senior writer Tim Layden, who joined the magazine in March 1994, primarily writes about the NFL, Olympic sports (chiefly track and field in the summer and alpine skiing in the winter) and horse racing, but has written about a wide variety of subjects for the publication and for SI.com. Before coming to Sports Illustrated, Layden spent six years at Newsday, three years at the Albany Times-Union and nine years at the Schenectady Gazette. During his three decades in journalism, Layden has won multiple sportswriting awards, including an Eclipse Award for coverage of thoroughbred horse racing in 1987. Among Layden's most significant work for the magazine are stories detailing the remarkable recovery of injured NFL player Kevin Everett (Dec. 2007), the phenomenon of Big Hits in the NFL (July 2007), the Triple Crown near-misses by Funny Cide (2003), Smarty Jones (2004) and Big Brown (2008), the tragic career of track star Marion Jones, the subculture of ticket scalping in the pre-Internet world (1997) and during the winter of 1995, the growing problem of gambling by college students. Born and raised in Whitehall, N.Y., Layden graduated in 1978 from Williams College, where he was an English major and a member of the basketball team. This is a great book about coaching football. It reads like a family historical novel with football as its backdrop. What I loved about it were the strategy comparisons and the technical details. I would easily give this give stats if it was just a little more about why and how these plays worked. Instead it feels more into the personal of the creators.I won't fault it for that. This book works on that level and many will love it for exactly the reason I wanted it to be different.Students of the game will learn more about the people in the game than about the strategies they invented (or reinvented.)What you are getting are great stories behind the plays. What I missed was the reasons how and why these strategies worked.Worth the read.

When I read Coaching Confidential: Inside the Fraternity of NFL Coaches I was disappointed in the lack of football strategy discussed in the book, so I decided to get this book. I was not disappointed. The book goes through the history of football and covers many important football plays and schemes. The exposition was clear and the book has mini biographies of many coaches that are behind some of the innovations (making it clear that it's hard to really pinpoint an innovator since many times the schemes evolve through time).I thought the book was great. I learned a lot. It was fun seeing the philosophy behind plays I ran in high school when I played. It was also enlightening to see how some plays work and it helped me understand why the read-option was so effective this season with the 49ers, Seahawks and Redskins. It's even more surprising when one takes into account that the book came out three years before the read-option made its splash appearance on the NFL scene this year.

I enjoyed this book. I am a football coach and the stories in this book tell where some concepts such as the Spread and Wildcat offenses originated. The book contains some typos but is interesting none the less. I have lent this book to others and they have enjoyed it also. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about the history of the game. It is a good read.

Rarely can you say for sure that a particular coach invented a particular tactic, technique, formation, alignment, defense, etc. But it is pretty easy to say which coaches made particular aspects of football strategy important throughout the sport. So, while football coaches may not be like inspired engineers who invent brand new things, they are like artists who create something new by alluding to the classics.That's the general thrust of Layden's fantastic book.

"Blood Sweat and Chalk" starts out well enough by illustrating the development of some of the landmark plays from which systems developed. Like some plays, however, the work suffers from poor "play design" as toward the end the author seems to be "reaching" by examining some obscure and inconsequential plays, offenses and defenses. Overall, an adequate work that provies good insight into some of football's landmark offensive and defensive schemes that becomes a "slog" suitable for only the most dedicated "football wonk" toward the end of the book.

While sometimes innaccurate (The 3 WR set of the Bill Walsh West Coast offense comes to mind) the book really does a good job at teaching the history of Football strategies. There's nothing quite like it. From single wing to Lombardi sweep to the spread. The problem is with the format of the book, is that each chapter is one play. Just one play. That's often useful, in describing Student Body Right. Lombardi's power run game could use more than the power sweep, explaining the bedrock play of NFL rushing, the 'Power O'. Readers should know 'power' means the man blocking schemes for running with pulling guards. But the book is still informative and interesting, and will show you how cyclical things are. If you like books like this, read Smartfootball the books and the website. NFlbreakdowns and insidethepylon, web only authors like Mike Tanier are great resources too. Read the book, understand the history, than check out those resources for what's happening right NOW. Following Football's strategic evolution is the most rewarding and enjoyable way to be a football fan. It's a shame that the national sports discourse is so tawdry and cheap, so full of nonsensical beliefs, when fans really thought 'deflategate' last year would prevent the Patriots from being able to focus on the Seahawks and would lose the Superbowl...'is this distraction distracting you?' 'how about now?' , 'now??'. "Distractions" as reported by ESPN, have nothing to do with what happens on the field. They are distractions for the fans, preventing them from learning, reading, discussing ANYTHING that Matters to the games being played. The plays in this book, mattered, immensely, in winning and losing games. The plays diagrammed, animated in motion on NFlbreakdowns and insidethepylon, MATTER. 99% of the things Sportstalk radio, ESPN and all talking heads talk about, DO NOT.

4 starsI must admit the cover made me buy this book,this is my first read from this author so i didn't know what to expect but in the end i was pleasantly surprised.I liked Della and Carter story ,is about second chances and about falling in love in each other even when you know that you are from different societe world you can't stop feelings.Carter is a member of the the Screw crew,along with his others friends ,he is rich,hot and handsome.Della just want to finish college and make better life for her little sister and herself.But one night she met Carter and her life will change forever.The moment Carter see Della he wants her, he doesn't want to admit,but he is constantly thinking of her.Scared from those feeling he is doing everything to hurt her feelings.Della know that Carter is heartless,it's a product of deep mommy issues. He wants to graduate and work his way to the top position in his dad company.They share passion for one night,and after one huge understanding Della run away.Years later they meet again but this time Della has a huge surprise for Carter,he have a daughter.Overall heartless is quick,steamy and read about second chances.The writing is good and have story and characters development.

It starts with a bet …this second chance romance, the first in a new series, and what a entertaining and addictive first instalment it is…. the Screw Crew is a band of close knit, loyal best friends….. and Carter is the first of the guys to have his story told…This author has written a simply unputdownable story filled with wonderful characters…Carter is an enigma the face he portrays to the outside world provides no insight into his true self….fortunately his point of view is represented in the narrative as well as that of Della the strong, hardworking heroine, which ensures a better understanding of both their perspectives on the events as they unfold..in many ways Carter’s and Della’s circumstances are similar with a family responsibilities weighing heavy on their shoulders but their responses are very different,,,The Screw Crew are a brotherhood of super hot guys and I have already fallen in love with their easy banter and camaraderie..not forgetting they are all sexy as hell…..I can not wait to read all of their stories and hopefully get to read more about Carter and Della…I really do not want to say goodbye to them just yet… this book pulled every kind of emotion from me frustration, anger, sadness and laughter but above all else it had a feel good factor that left me satisfied for now but wanting more…an enthralling 5 star read……I received a copy of this book from the author…

She has studied hard, and worked hard, with no time for dating or socializing. She shares a small apartment with her gorgeous roommates Willow, Leigh, and Evie. She can feel the end goal of getting her degree, going home to collect her younger sister Jamie, and getting a good paying job to support them. That is until the Screw Crew walks into her diner.The Screw Crew was made up of 5 friends that were more like brothers: Rhett, Marcus, Jaxson, Logan and their “heartless” leader Carter Hayes. Carter is ruthless and always gets what he wants. That is till he sets his sight on Della. There is a bet who will seduce her first, but she is not having any of their games. Carter's chances are really reduced when there is an unfortunate misunderstanding involving Della's favorite roommate Evie.Even though Della shows Carter nothing but indifference, she secretly is very much attracted to him and even admits, if just to herself, that she has a big crush on him. She hates him, but wants him. Even when they come together in a moment of unguarded passion, unfortunate consequences tear them apart.This is a complete novel, but I'm sure there will be more stories of the Screw Crew. These boys seem to have hearts of gold, but morals of a “tom cat”. I'll be anxious to read more books about their complicated relationships.

Heartless is a perfect second chance love story, this is the first story in the enemies to lovers series . The screw crew guys were all jerks but at the same time uber sexy . Carter and Della characters were perfect compliment for each other, totally different yet perfect match . This is the first time I have read Michelle Horst and I totally enjoyed it, the story was a page turner and all the characters were sketched so perfectly. I read Heartless in one sitting and purchased Reckless right away , can't wait to read the remaining books on the screw crew guys . Would definitely recommend this story.

I enjoy this types of stories, so I couldn't wait for this book. Though I was apprehensive at the same time. I wasn't sure about the part where in the blurb said she new about the bet, but Della still let Carter in. I'm not fan of this, but I didn't let it to discourage me, because at the end you need to find out for yourself how author express it. Will I love it? Or will I hate it? And I have to say Michelle did a marvellous job! That part didn't bothered me at all. It's actually has different touch to it. At least it's how I saw it.I loved both Carter and Della. She was someone who was ready to sacrifice anything to make a person she loves to be happy and taken care of. And Carter... Well, he was a heartless d***. But behind it was something more. Something that won me over.And here comes the confession time. After this book I'm proud The Screw Crew babe! I have a HUGE crush on all five guys! Yes, for a short while at the beginning, I wanted to smack them, but soon I was hooked. They aren't what I thought they would be. They are more. And I so looking forward for theirs books.

Ikkyū Sōjun was the Howard Stern of Zen masters. Born in 1394, he lived through most of the 15th century. Ikkyū served as a temple’s abbot for less than two weeks before he quit in disgust, vowing to move into a red-light district—apparently he wanted to live among people he found more honest and less hypocritical. The Zen master despised the corruption and snobbery of monastic politics."Crow with no Mouth" is a collection of Ikkyū’s verse, which is largely in the Zen tradition--featuring natural subjects and simple wisdom in a sparse style. Of course, as per my comments in the preceding paragraph, there are a few poems on topics such as cunnilingus and debauchery—so it’s not what one would call a child-friendly collection (unless one enjoys explaining the sexual exploits of a lecherous monk to one’s child.) The more explicit poems may seem like a diversion from the Zen path, but perhaps not. Maybe Ikkyū offered them as a way to train the mind, to observe one’s reaction to shocking commentary as a means of changing one’s way of thinking.A few of my favorite lines of a more traditional nature include: -“you can’t make cherry blossoms by tearing off petals to plant; only spring does that” -“sometimes all I am is dark emptiness; I can’t hide in the sleeves of my own robes” -“it’s logical: if you’re not going anywhere any road is the right one” -“the edges of the sword are life and death; no one knows which is which” -“even in its scabbard my sword sees you” -“a flower held up twirled between human fingers; a smile barely visible” -“in war there’s no time to teach or learn Zen; carry a strong stick; bash your attackers”Here are a few of those jarring lines that I mentioned above:-“that stone Buddha deserves all the bird s*** it gets”-“all koans just lead you on but not the delicious pussy of the young girls I go down on”-“ten fussy days running this temple all red tape; look me up if you want o in the bar whorehouse fish market”-“my dying teacher could not wipe himself; unlike you disciples who use bamboo; I cleaned his lovely ass with my bare hands”-“don’t hesitate get laid that’s wisdom; sitting around chanting, what crap”-“who teaches truth? good/bad the wrong way; Crazy Cloud knows the taste of his own s***” [Crazy Cloud was Ikkyū’s name for himself.]When he left the monastery, Ikkyū shredded the certificate that served as his monastic credential. Some of his students found it, and pieced it back together. That led to the following verse:-“one of you saved my satori paper I know it piece by piece; you pasted it back together; now watch me burn it once and for all”Ikkyū’s verse asks us to reevaluate what it means to be sacred or profane. The orthodox view would be that Ikkyū fell from the sacred life of a monk. However, Ikkyū tells us that one can degrade what is important by raising the wrong things to sacred status. Conversely, some of what we believe to be profane is just rooted in habitual and ill-reasoned ways of thinking.I’d recommend this work for those who love the spare form of Japanese poetry, and who don’t mind a hard jolt to their psyche occasionally.

Received in pristine condition, I have long sought this little volume of one of the more idiosyncretic zen teachers in the history of zen. His poetry, art, haiku, zen and utter humanity are revealed in this collection of some of his poetry, along with his awakening poem: "Hearing a crow with no mouth cry in the deep darkness of the night, I feel a longing for my father before he was born." We all feel that longing, whether we are aware of it or not. Stephen Berg meets Ikkyu poet to poet. I recommend t his volume if you are lucky enough to come by it."

I'm relatively new to Zen but I love this book of poetry. It's irreverent yet still imbued with respect for the way. I'm sure I cannot express it sufficiently or correctly so my suggestion is to find out for yourself.

While I have very much enjoyed reading this book of poetry, the average individual may have a difficult time following and understanding this translation.This is a wonderful book of poems by Ikkyu, but because of the literal translation the average person might have a difficult time following the Zen master here.You need a good understanding of the Japanese sentence structure to follow the translation.But it is an excellent read of the masters poetry.

along with pessoa, my favorite dead poet.a text which entered my memory and on which i dwelt the whole day:"don’t worry please please how many times do I have to say itthere’s no way not to be who you are and where"in a way, this is exactly what michel henry says, in his phenomenological work. the self-affection of flesh, its inability of being otherwise, its desire to run away from itself and its own suffering, its affective character.the translation is beautiful, very accessible and very well crafted.and, of course, his erotic and irreverent poems are anthological :)

Somehow I expected this to be a somewhat kinky listing of snake oil products. To my surprise, this is a solid treatise on first, maintaining good health to keep the male libido functioning at a high level and using sound foods that science has been shown to have benefit on the various body functions that support the libido. I felt as though I had been given a lecture by a medical and nutrition specialist, though much more enjoyable. The foods here, with very few exceptions, are found in the local supermarket. Buy increasing consumption, men can greatly benefit their libidos, without hardly noticing a change in their diet. Well done. I think men and women would find this book very enlightening.

This book contains an exhaustive list of aphrodisiacs. Some are the common ones that everyone has heard of, but there are a number which I was completely unfamiliar with. It even includes several recipes at the end, which is a really nice touch.

This book has a refreshing take in that the author states right up front that there are no shortcuts to getting results. It reviews several of the "well known" aphrodisiacs such as oysters and chocolate, but there are some surprises here as well. The next few chapters delve into lesser known food products and spices with aphrodisiac qualities. Quite interesting with good, actionable advice.

I knew many of these, but have to admit there were a lot I have never heard of either, like asafetida or maca. One thing I liked about Tom Shaw's book is that he's very clear in saying that there isn't one instant solution, or one solution that fits everyone. Every person is different, so what works for one may not work for the other. Experimentation is key to success with this.Some of the aphrodisiacs mentioned were very common, like ginger or pepper. Others were more exotic and I'm not even sure where to look for them. The section on Super Aphrodisiacs that give a big boost was a good read. Still, I'd prefer to try the more common ones first, going for the super ones if all else fails. There is such a long list of great herbs and spices here to try, and ways to consume them. The section on foods that can harm your sexual performance and libido was a good read too.It's wonderful that Tom pointed out that these are helpful in increasing a man's libido, but a healthy diet and exercise go a long way too.Overall a really good read with many, many helpful tips. Don't miss the Bonus recipes at the end. I haven't tried them yet but they look really yummy!

Solid handbook with a good overview of vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices and their historic uses as a aphrodisiac. I always find these facts interesting. Many of these items are easily found in every supermarket -- it won't hurt to add these foods to your diet ;) The book also contains a section about super aphrodisiacs, for the folks who want more.. But all in all the book stresses that a healthy diet is important, for your body and your libido. With the male libido decreasing after a certain age, following these food recommendations -all healthy foods- will do your body good in any case and perhaps with some additional benefits for the romantic times.I was happy to see a recipe section at the end. I always enjoy trying out new recipes.

Within the scope of the presented book, two different sensor-actuator-systems are presented being based on an integrated capacitive and inductive displacement sensor, respectively. About the Author

Rüdiger G. Ballas was born in 1971 in Blieskastel, Germany. After finishing education as an assistant in physics at the Technical School for Natural Sciences Ludwigshafen, Germany, he received the diploma in microsystemtechnology in 1999 from the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern, Germany. From 1999 until 2001 he worked with Tele Quarz in Neckarbischofsheim, Germany, where he was head of the group concerning microstructuring of AT-quartz crystals and development of high-frequency inverted MESA-quartzes. From 2001 until 2006 he worked as a Ph.D. student at Darmstadt University of Technology in the field of piezoelectric bending multilayer actuators with integrated sensors for tip deflection measurements. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2006 from Darmstadt University of Technology. His actual research fields are theoretical mechanics, electromechanical system theory and modeling of the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuators.

If you read only one book on Afghanistan this year, this book is the one to read. Insightful and unbiased, the author has no political agenda except to help the reader understand the Afghan people and the reasons for America's continued involvement in what has become Afghanistan's ongoing civil war. It answers the question "Why?" behind such events as our alliance with Pakistan and our continued support for Karzai's corrupt government. It also makes the significant point that the dynamics of the northern section of the country (consisting of Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, and other minorities) are very different from the southern Pashtun provinces, and it would be a mistake to assume there is a "one size fits all" solution to ending the war. Although the reader is presented with some unpleasant facts, the author is optimistic that a peaceful solution is possible.

An excellent guide and first hand account of how we became intertwined with Afghanistan. Williams presents a brief, but concise history before presenting his own experiences and interviews with those who helped shape a nation almost perpetually invaded by its neighbors.

Extremely detailed and a good history overview of Afghanistan. Unsure of how most of the book is without sources however..

Fantastic book written from years of experience and travel ; what more could you want. I had the pleasure to take a few of professor Brian Williams classes and cannot a comparative teacher at his level of knowledge with teaching ability.

I approached this book with a bit hesitation expecting a dense jumble of facts, figures, political quagmire & a long drawn out yawn. Except for the latter it is indeed what I expected but so well written that the stories are engaging, the facts memorable & revealing, the figures fascinating & the quagmire just that. I am a likely target for this book as the good Dr explains in his intro. I have had the only basic knowledge & news-fed ideas of Afghanistan & the war, but after reading Dr William's book I have a much greater appreciation for the immense complexities of the Muslim tribal influences, the geographical constraints & the enormous task of creating a balanced, stable & modern civilization in a region that has historically been a giant clusterF.I'd encourage anyone with even the idlest of passing interest in Afghanistan & its stormy present & past to pick this book up without hesitation.

The title is misleading. The first 124 of 239 pages (first three chapters) deal with the ethnic makeup of the country, the geography, and how Afghanistan developed into a country. Nothing classified there. The book only provides three maps. It was confusing reading so much about the geography, the different provinces, and the ethnic makeup only having three black and white maps to refer to. The following chapter gives a very brief history of major events in Afghanistan including the Soviet invasion, the Afghan civil war and the rise of the Taliban. This is where the book begins to mention the US and information that was at one time classified but released 20 years ago. This chapter covers nearly 30 years of Afghan history along with US, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan involvement in less than 50 pages. If you are looking to read this period of Afghan history in detail refer to Ghost Wars: by Steve Coll. If you are looking to read into detail about the Taliban check out Taliban by Ahmed Rashid. The final chapter covers the U.S. War in Afghanistan. If you are looking to read more in detail on this check out The Longest War by Peter L. Bergen because this book leaves a lot of details out. Point being, this book lacked many important historical details that happened thoughout the 1970s into 2011 that led to why the U.S. is currently bogged down in Afghanistan.I began questioning the legitimacy of the author's book when I read on page 102 Mullah Omar wearing the cloak of the Prophet Muhammad being "donned for the first time in recorded history." This is untrue. It has been recorded in history as being worn before, for example, by Kind Dost Muhammad Khan in 1834. That fact can be found in In the Graveyard of Empires by Seth G. Jones. Even Rashid mentions in his book that the cloak was out of its tomb 60 years prior to Mullah Omar wearing it. There is a part in the book were he mentions US troops not being involved enough throughout the local Afghan villages in the countryside. Please refer to The Wrong War by Bing West to dispute this statement. There is also no notes section or bibliography in this book. The book constantly repeats information thoughout it as if it was copied and pasted. There are also spelling and punctuation errors that found throughout it.

I read this book in just two days, it reads like a novel it is so well written. For anyone who has read the Kite Runner, Three Cups of Tea etc. or just wants to know what we are doing in this country, this book fills in all the blanks. Each chapter begins with one of the author's own adventures in Afghanistan, like living with pagan mountaineers, working with the US army, or traveling with an Afghan warlord. Then the subsequent chapter explores topics like Afghanistan's various warring ethnic groups, the history of the Soviet invasion, and the history of US warfare in this country since 9/11, ancient history etc. You don't have to be a specialist to really get sucked into this easy read. Williams obviously loves this beautiful but tragic country and you will too after you've read it. You also understand what we are there fighting for and how we are (and aren't!) following in the footsteps of previous invaders. Cool photos and maps too.
