This play is always one of those great plays that you forget about until you happen to come across it again. It is very simple, entertaining, and meaningful. The story is not new, the characters either, but Lonergan has a way of presenting themes through this play that are missed when presented in other media or plays. Lobby Hero is perfect material for small producing companies.
Almost as good as actually seeing the performance
Nothing much to say. The script was in great condition as expected.
This is a well-written play with fully fleshed out characters. Many of the scenes are subtle and meaty enough that they make a good, challenging exercise for an actor working his/her craft. It's a good read, too.
The play reads well, and I can imagine it playing even better live. The main character, Jeff, is reminiscent of other characters that Lonergan has written for Mark Ruffalo. Read it, get the rights, do it.
Great play! Lonergan is a wonderful contemporary playwright!
Lobby Hero is a disappointingly average piece of work. While it has a few moments, there is certainly nothing here to knock someone off of their feet. As is per usual, Lonergan writes his dialogue well, but the characters are left a little lacking in motivations and overall arc. The lead character of Jeff is whom the author has spent the most time on, but the other characters fall by the wayside.What it all boils down to is that this seems to be Lonergan keeping in practice, not trying for greatness.
I bought the script last month, and now I'm hoping to direct the show in the future. For a playwright that's not a household-name for theatre-fans (yet!) and for a script that I don't think won any awards, Lobby Hero has overcome those odds to become arguably my favorite play.If you think you would like the issue of loyalty versus morality, then I think you would love Lobby Hero. The script is FILLED with ties to that issue, and it's intriguing every bit of the way.
