The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise, by Martín Prechtel

Review

"Martin Prechtel's book is beautifully written and wise … he offers stories that are precious and life-sustaining. Read carefully, and listen deeply." —Mary Oliver“Here Martín Prechtel sends us an invitation to peace: to personal, village-level, and world peace. His indigenous wisdom gives us much-needed insights into the reverberating impact of not grieving our heart-rending losses. Most poignantly, he shows us the devastating inheritance of our ever more voracious wars and the misunderstood burden of ghosts that swirl around our modern warriors. Yet, instead of leaving us more despondent, every chapter holds out a new seed, breaking into new life. Martín coaxes us through funny and quirky turns of the ordinary and the miraculous to leave us inspired to wake up singing to the beauty of our rising sun and live in praise of this complex and gracious world.”—Inge Hindel, MD/PhD, family and integrated medicine doctor at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, Oregon “Martín Prechtel’s genius takes many forms: painting, music, a continuously evolving learning community, and thank God, books like this one. I get so excited reading it, I cannot stay in one place. I sit reading on my porch…then back to my living room to make a fire and watch Martín’s gorgeously alive prose burn inside me. His ideas and language are so enlivening, my impulse is to quote great sections of it. I’ll just touch on a few of his brilliant insights around how animals help us to grieve, and to make our way out of grief into the beauty of praising. As he says, animals help us grieve our loss of naturalness. And we have mostly forgotten ‘the very old worldwide tribal custom of having a “grief relative” from the wild living together with us in our houses.’ Caring for animals is a sacred responsibility. To truly grieve and to weep deeply is something the animals really do help us with. And O they help us praise too, to accomplish that most marvelous art of turning the grief into praising. Martín tells us, ‘Let the world jump up and live again,’ and he makes that happen with his delicious sentences. Read this necessary, very beautiful book, and then read it again.”—Coleman Barks, author of Rumi: Soul Fury“Many veterans are now banding into “warrior societies” but do not know which direction to go. In my work, I see on a daily basis many new patients (veterans) coming in for help: some with traumatic brain injury (TBI), substance abuse (mainly alcohol), post-traumatic disorders, and the all-too-frequent ‘suicide attempt’ with which a new generation of warriors kick off the repressed memories of Vietnam-era warriors remembering what was suppressed for so many years, their minds desperately making an attempt to resolve an ungrieved, ghost-ridden past. The Smell of Rain on Dust beautifully addresses the possibility of a society of warriors so changed by having killed that they become a society of healers to heal those wounded in war, both old and new.”—John Ishmael, RN BSN, nurse physician liaison and discharge planner at Salt Lake City Veterans Hospital “Alchemy, by definition, metabolizes and transmutes. A reading of The Smell of Rain on Dust is alchemical. If the shredding of the glorious web of life has you sinking into a depth of despair, read this book; your grief can metabolize and transmute such wrongness. Deep and delightful, The Smell of Rain on Dust is also instructive. It will charm you into wanting to live life more fully, to walk in beauty even amongst modernity’s polarized spiritual failures.”—Randy Hayes, director of Foundation Earth and founder of Rainforest Action Network “Once again, Martin Prechtel is up to his old tricks … ‘making medicine out of poison.’ The Smell of Rain on Dust takes grief, pain, strife, and other elements of a society in distress and concocts a potion that actually heals those who have ears to listen. In a world that needs to grieve its wrongdoings but has lost its ability or forgotten its ancient wisdom to do so, Mr. Prechtel has been selected as a spokesman to reunite modern man with ancient wisdom. Not an enviable position!”—H. Bruce Coslor, Vietnam veteran, Nebraska cattle rancher, songwriter, musician, and grandfather “I love Martín’s book. It was amazing reading it aloud to the ocean. At one point I moved up the coast assuming the listening birds, seals, and whales would stay, but they moved with me. The waves listened and the wind. Read this magical book as it takes you into the courtyard of the heart.”—M. Bacon, international award-winning documentary film director and producer “This wonderful book The Smell of Rain on Dust not only addresses this culture’s lack of grief but it discusses in poignant ways how our inability to grieve has created many of our culture’s delirious, fast paced, toxic, constant state-of-emergency symptoms where depression, addiction, and mediocrity reign. As a mother, daughter, teacher, and farmer I found this book to stir up a deep prayer, that as a people we might, one day, through being with the depths of our grief, find so much love and deliciousness in being alive that we praise this life so genuinely, nothing is left unloved.”—Melanie MacKinnon, teacher, farmer, and owner of Frog Belly Farms, Colorado“I held my personal grief for decades until, with the help of the author, I ceremonially metabolized my grief into a thing of beauty. Like a magic genie, I popped out of the bottle I had crawled into with a renewed love of life. In The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise, Prechtel leads the reader down this same trail of animals and life in the womb while revealing that grief is the sister of praise. Like Prechtel’s other books, this astonishing book draws me back to reexamine the beauty of a life lived well.”—Wick Fisher, retired postmaster, Vietnam veteran, and orator at soldier funerals “Brilliant gems of storytelling illuminate teachings of inspiration and hope in this new work by Martin Prechtel, a work to which he brings a traditional indigenous understanding of how to deal with loss.”—Michael Harner, author of Cave and Cosmos and founder of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies

I think most readers will either love or hate this. The author's voice/writing style is... let's say "unique." I think he's going for poetic, but it comes across as disjointed and weird in places. Strangely, at other times, it's just brilliant. I don't think most people who don't like the writing style will wade through to find those awesome bits.Grief and praise are thoroughly examined through the lens of many cultures. It has the potential to inspire or confuse. It's not your typical book, that's for sure. If you are looking for something outside of the box, this is it. Just download a sample first and make sure that it's your cup of tea.

Martin Prechtel's "The Smell of Rain on Dust" is beautiful from its title on through every page. Savor this: "The Sea speaks in a million ways, but the waves always lick the face of our hurt until our real face reappears from beneath." And I ask: Why isn't this book being reviewed in the NY Times? Why isn't Martin Prechtel being interviewed by Charlie Rose? This man is a mental, spiritual and artistic giant. But such is our world. We pretend to value honesty while hiding everything about ourselves.I've learned more about grief than I thought it was possible to know. Yes, one misjudges, perhaps, gets hurt, feels pain and if the betrayal is deep enough, grief ensues or is buried. We all know this. But Prechtel brings us into a kaleidoscopic world of pain we never knew existed, a world that holds the meaning of grief psychologically, politically, financially, historically, mythically and spiritually. He draws us a picture that sparkles of grief's relationship to praise and the saving grace of praise, showing how it spins our big world and our little worlds. He flat out states, ". . . without grief we can never grow ourselves into real people."He points out the relationship between suppressed grief and alcoholism. He homes in on returning vets, stating what I have always secretly believed: we humans are not cut out for such massacres and violence and ugly killings and we will pay for it with our souls. We are actually a gentle species, history notwithstanding. Additionally, Prechtel lays out for us the idea of one family member carrying "the old family grief" and the ramifications of that, a truly fascinating concept. Add in the idea of reincarnation (which he doesn't do) and the family picture becomes a marvel of connections that were heretofore unperceived. He speaks of revenge and its impulse to war, one of the best chapters in the book. He comments, " . . . it is truly nightmarish how easily and how quickly grief can be converted into group-endorsed violence." I think of Israel. I think of all the many Arab tribes, sects and subsects whose sole motivation seems to be revenge for events that sometimes took place hundreds of years ago. Well, every nation has its similar history. 9/11/2001. He remarks, "Revenge took no cultural talent." He understands that people's first reaction is to find and attack what caused their pain. Carefully, he points out, "But to retain revenge instead of going through the gauntlet of the sorrow of grief was too easy and would only 'freeze' grief in its tracks, turning the moment into toxic stone." In his poetic way he tells us something of healing, "But feelings were considered a kind of wind, and there was no need to freeze the wind, but better to thaw the clouds of hate into a rain of tears that fed the thirsty ground of the human soul."There is not one bonafide therapist out there who would not profit from reading this deep little book -- and then be able to pass their knowledge on to their patients. Back to the Arabs. Arabic culture, for those of you who do not know, is a deeply poetic culture, filled with admirers of Rumi and Hafiz. If I had a million bucks I'd print Prechtel's book in a mix of Arabic and drop it by airplane on every Arabic country. Killing your fellow-man would look a lot less appetizing and suicide bomber sacrifices would be seen for the insanity they are, and utterly unnecessary for the people would then access their natural wisdom and discover an alternative to fighting, hatred, war and revenge. Please allow me my little fantasy. The chapter on money as "grief not listened to" was a real eye-opener. But however interesting it was, I confess some of it flew over my head. I would have profited by a much longer chapter with more nitty-gritty examples. Though the book is only 170 pages long, every page holds gems of high value. His take on science made me laugh and nod, even as both he and I have respect for what it can do: "Science is basically a cult of measurement." I also loved his teachings about "real people." I wish there had been more of this as well. Regarding what a "real person" is, I felt a gut-level agreement as I read, "a person who knows that all the world's weather wildness is the grief-binge of the Earth herself as she wanders singing, howling, weeping through the streets of her own village: 'the universe,' in hopes of being heard."As he connects us to the beautiful partnership between grief and praise (teaching me once again the truth that the Universe is a loving place whose structure is always geared to healing and love and wholeness, despite appearances) he cautions us, "If the way we live does not praise life, then we are not alive." I thought about that in my own life and I saw, after a little resistance, that it was true. We are half-dead and dying when we fail to see how beautiful and valuable we are, how beautiful and valuable our enemies are and what the world needs to become the paradise we have all, in our secret dreams, envisioned and hoped it to be. It needs us. All of us. Voices raised in appreciation for it ALL.Martin Prechtel is a "savior" of the first order. I've read most of his books, innocent and profound, joyful and full of despair, but in the end he saves us from our selves in the only way one can be saved: not by power, not by money, not by safety, not by government or corporation, not even by therapy, but by that inward turning we all must do, facing our darkness, diving in and coming out the other side into the bright light of love, truth, healing and joy. It takes courage to do this, far more courage than quitting a job or relationship, having a child, going to war, moving across the world, or finding yourself in a disastrous flood or earthquake. Inner pain is the only demon life gives us. May you have the courage to face it. May this be your fate!

I find myself spending hours packing up and giving away so much stuff. Stuff I didn't buy or ask for. It just comes with the culture and it's numbing. After reading this book I understand better why I feel driven to eliminate the unnecessary in my life and reach some bedrock of real value. Perhaps if I go outside and stay there, as I often dream of doing, all the stuff will stop accruing. This book touched my heart intelligently and lovingly as few do. Thank you Martin Prechtel.

This is a powerful book about grief being a way to praise the person or think we have lost. It is also about what happens when we don't grieve properly. It is especially powerful about what happens when we don't grieve war, including grieving for those we killed or maimed by our actions. HIGHLY recommended. Doug Renick

This is the third time I've purchased this book because I keep giving it away as there are so many people suffering alone with their grief, often including myself. I am completely enamored and fed by the sustenance of the beautiful words that describe this utterly vital and forgotten facet of living life.

Sometimes the authors sentence structure and wordiness complicates or hides the message. However, I loved and appreciated the author’s wisdom regarding the creative or destructive power of grief properly experienced or squelched. He accurately explains the deep spiritual sickness in our culture due to our misunderstanding and avoidance of grief.

This is an important book, for everyone. Martín Prechtel is not only an important thinker, he is a profound guide for the soul. His perspectives fundamentally changed - for the better - my relationship with grief. Loss and grief are part of each of our lives - and so this should be part of everyone's library.

This book is a refreshing and welcome breath of air inside a culture that is so ashamed of expressing emotion. Each page is to be savored. A beautifully written piece of heartfelt poetry; it will become a favorite gift for friends that are silently trying to grieve their losses.

From Publishers Weekly

This encyclopedia of wartime journalism is a sweeping visual history, pairing writings and photographs that showcase the author's considerable expertise with a sprinkling of contributions from various correspondents. Sweeney, a professor of journalism and author of Secrets of Victory, meticulously traces the evolution of wartime journalism from the days of soldiers-as-journalists, exploring topics such as the "inflated news" of the 19th century and propaganda camouflaged as news in the 20th century, military and government censorship and technological advances. Along the way, he offers interesting tidbits about the correspondents (e.g., Winston Churchill first gained public admiration as a correspondent during the Boer War) and fascinating glimpses into their struggles, hardships and dedication. Although this book is certain to gratify military and journalism historians, its appeal beyond these factions is limited: war is ugly and terrible, and Sweeney's treatment is painstaking honest. As sharp as the text is, however, it's the chilling photographs-the lifeless gazes of battlefield victims, the war-scourged landscapes-that really tell the story of combat. 174 photographs and maps. From Booklist

When William Howard Russell reported to readers of The Times on incompetence in the British army during the Crimean War, the government was displeased. So it sent a photographer to Russia to prove how well things were going. Slanting and spinning war news is as old as modern journalism, a theme reiterated in this photo-heavy presentation with text by journalism professor Sweeney and an introduction by David Halberstam. Another is the extreme danger courted by the war correspondent or photographer, with many having died to get the story: such was the fate of Robert Capa and Ernie Pyle, to mention just the most famous. Theirs and other journalists' stories populate the text, which builds the difficulties of covering a war, technical or political, around a summary history of the particular war in question. The selection of photographs is ample as well, including many famous, powerful, and disturbing scenes of the American Civil War, the Spanish civil war, World War II, Vietnam, and other conflicts. This tome's range and visual emphasis will keep aspiring war journalists interested from cover to cover. Gilbert TaylorCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Brooksbank effectively avoids stereotypes while adding humor and cultural specificity to the story with her detailed and lively, colorful, mixed-media images. Safety-conscious caregivers may suck their teeth, but there's no denying the joy in this book. Atinuke has bottled the delightful energy of the Anna Hibiscus books and poured it into this treat for younger readers.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Featuring loose lines and an earth-toned backdrop, Brooksbank’s energetic mixed-media art showcases the brilliant colors of African vegetation and clothing, and infuses Atinuke’s sweet phrases with warmth and humor.—Publishers WeeklyThis clever story puts the focus on the letter B...Each page displays one terse sentence, such as "B is for beautiful." The colorful mixed- media art, however, is expansive, whether showing a single image of a curious baby playing with her toe, or detailing the lush surroundings. This one's a charmer.—BooklistViewers will appreciate this sunny African alternative to “Over the River and Through the Woods,” especially if readers-aloud make the comic most of the concluding speedy rewind that brings the sibs home again.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksThe Nigerian-born writer Atinuke plays with our expectations of how ABC books progress with “B Is for Baby” (Candlewick, 32 pages, $16.99), a picture book set in Africa that never moves beyond the one letter...The warm colors and loose lines of Angela Brooksbank’s mixed-media pictures exude happiness and reassurance for readers ages 2-6.—The Wall Street Journal

Neat find, great pictures. This appeared once a while ago at a very hefty price and I put off buying it, missing my chance. I saw it again later on, from a seller who wasn't looking to gouge buyers, and lucky me. If, like me, you can look at slickrock and red desert all day, this is your thing. Not too many of these books around, which is doubly cool.

Popular histories of the fall of the Roman Republic are not in short supply. There are excellent entries in this crowded field. One can look to Tom Holland’s Rubiconor the recent New York Times bestseller The Storm Before the Storm by popular podcaster Mike Duncan. Into this crowded field we have Mortal Republicby Edward J. Watts. Dr. Watts is Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego. His previous works have focused on the period of late antiquity and the clashes between pagan and Christian culture. In his newest work Dr. Watts examines the forces that brought about the end of the Roman Republic. This book does not start, as is common, with the rise of the Gracchi brothers. Those radical reformers whose lives and deaths plunged the Republic into short periods of chaos. Instead he begins in 280 BC, with the wars between Rome and the Greek King Pyrrhus. Why this period? He wants to show the nature of the Roman leaders in this period. Roman leadership was a duty that was held by men who held honor above wealth. This is an important point that will be seen throughout this book. In the early days of the Republic the nobles of Rome “agreed that virtue lay in service to Rome and that dishonor fell upon those who put their private interests above those of the Republic.” This noble ideal would become stressed as the Roman Republic grow in size, power and wealth. The change can be seen as the Romans fight the Carthaginians for control of Sicily. The Punic Wars spread Roman power abroad and soon the Republic had foreign territories to manage. With those territories came officials needed to run them. Those officials tended to become wealthy in those jobs. That wealth became the new motive for public service. Now honor gave way to avarice. As the quest for wealth and glory became the prime motivator factions began to arrive. Those factions would eventually wear away at the fabric of the Republic until it frayed and crumbled. This did not happen in one lifetime. It took almost two centuries for the ethics and values of the Romans to devolve to the place where strong men like Sulla, Marius, Pompey, and Caesar could tear it apart. The great weakness in the Roman system was the reliance on personal honor to maintain itself. Tradition and honor were no defense against personal ambition and tremendous wealth. The book is written for the general reader. One does not need a specialized background in Roman history to understand. The topic is indeed timely. In the Preface to the book Dr. Watts hopes “that this book allows its readers to better appreciate the serious problems that result both from politicians who breach a republic’s political norms and from citizens who choose not to punish them for doing so.” That is as far as he goes in trying to connect the past and the present. It is up to the readers to notice the signs and to take warning. The book ends as did the Republic: with the reign of Augustus. For over half a century the Republic had been torn by one faction after another competing for power. What are we supposed to gather from this book? Why read another book on the fall of a government that fell 2,000 years ago? Because the freedoms and laws of a republic must continually be upheld and protected. Ronal Reagan famously said “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” Perhaps the closing statement of the book sums it up best. “When citizens take the health and durability of their republic for granted, that republic is at risk. This was as true in 133 BC or 82 BC or 44 BC as it is in AD 2018. In ancient Rome and in the modern world, a republic is a thing to be cherished, protected, and respected. If it falls, an uncertain, dangerous, and destructive future lies on the other side

What a fascinating and timely book this is. This is the history of how the Roman Republic transmuted into an autocracy; going from an austere, honor-driven, consensus based society to an unimaginably wealthy oligarchy which rested on the shoulders of one man. Well-written and beautifully flowing, this is a hard book to put down.Watts describes the early Republic, with its interlocking system of mutual responsibility, where the most sought after goods; that is, honors and public acclaim, were the prerogative of the state. Individual wealth did not bring prestige, although it undoubtedly made people’s lives comfortable. He also makes clear that Rome was a regional power until the time of the Second Punic War. In order to defend itself from Carthage, and its greatest general, Hannibal, Rome had to recast itself, and in doing so the seeds of its destruction were planted. As time goes along, Watts shows us the cracks in the Republic. Because the Roman polity was based on tradition and especially consensus, eventually there were men who decided to advance themselves by breaking the consensus and promoting violence in order to get their way. This led to crisis upon crisis, and eventually to civil war. The outward forms of the Republic remained, but inwardly the system of government was hollow and led, almost inevitably, to Augustus and autocracy.I found this book to be thought provoking and a bit frightening. The parallels between our own time and the destruction of the Republic are far too close for comfort. We have as our leader a man who also refuses to accept the norms of our society and government, who lies incessantly, who proclaims that he alone can fix our problems, although he is the source of many of them, who provokes violence to get his own way, and who appeals to the mob in order to force his decisions on the rest of us. The Roman Republic was not sturdy enough to withstand the selfishness of greedy men, will the American Republic be strong enough to withstand Donald Trump? My one real criticism of this book is the use of the now somewhat dated “BC” instead of the more inclusive “BCE,” which stands for Before the Common Era. It has always seemed sort of silly to me to describe ancient societies as Before Christ, when those societies existed in their own time. For those who are interested, the use of “AD,” Anno Domini, or In the Year of Our Lord, is likewise anachronistic and should be replaced with “CE,” meaning Common Era.I recommend this book to anyone interested in Roman history, or indeed, to anyone who is worried about the fate of Western Civilization.

A small agricultural republic explodes into a global empire and dissolves in a paroxysm of violence driven by gross inequality of wealth and civic status.

A study of several hundred years of ancient Rome, “Mortal Republic” tries to analyze why it became vulnerable to dictators and eventually fell. I found the writing style largely dry and often too repetitive, reading like a basic history textbook than anything else. As fascinating as the subject should be, this was often more of a slog of recited dates, names, and battles than the political study I was expecting. Watts’ conclusion, that the Republic fell to tyrants like Julius Caesar and eventually Augustus, was an interesting one- namely, that the average citizen allowed it to happen over centuries and in the end was willing to give up working for a republic, and give up many of their freedoms, to gain basic stability and safety. For all the senators and consuls working the system for their own selfish purposes, Watts believes it is the average citizen who allowed them to do this, and so allowed their republic to disintegrate. While he isn’t subtle about the parallels he makes between the fall of the Roman Republic and today’s political climate, perhaps there is no subtle way to do it.A thought provoking, if dry, read.

History does not, as they say, repeat itself, but historical conditions do. Make Rome Great Again.

The government of the Roman Republic, upon which our constitution is based, was interesting as was the history. But, what was really frightening was the way the republic collapsed into dictatorship when factions could no longer compromise and govern effectively. Chilling.

Interesting perspective, well constructed and presented.

Rescued is the 17th Andy Carpenter mystery and another winner for sure. Even though it’s a mystery, there is laugh out loud humor throughout this imaginative book. I have read and loved all the books in the series but I’m sure you can jump right into this one and have an enjoyable read. Loved it.

Reading an Andy Carpenter Mystery is a lot like eating a box of delicious chocolates. You tell yourself to go slow, and to savior. Butbefore you know it, you have lost all control, and are gobbling the chocolates with both hands. This is a good read: all my favoritecharacters are present:Andy, Laurie, Hike, Sam, Edna, Marcus, Willie, Pete, Vince, and the Bubalah Brigade. And of course, for Wagsthere is Tara and Sebastian and sixty-one assorted rescues.

I just love the Andy Carpenter books. I would like if one came out a week! No pressure!! The characters are so life like. And the stories are interesting and complex. Being from New Jersey, I identify with the venues and with the excellent narrator’s accent. Not that you have to be from New Jersey to enjoy the books; but it brings another element for me.

I love the Andy Carpenter series, and drag my reading through the books because I hate to have them end. This story was really exciting, with a complicated plot made up of several threads which Mr. Rosenfelt wove together in an intricate and wonderful story. It's so much fun seeing the characters again. Only complaint: Can't the books be longer??

I love all the characters and I've really become invested in them. As soon as I see a new one released, I buy it and read it the same day! Then I pray that David is working hard to ring us the next one. I highly recommend it!

I loved "Rescued" -- Andy Carpenter is a great protagonist and David Rosenfelt has set up another "whodunit" with Andy rescuing the dogs and finding the bad guys. I love the characters in this series and Rescued delivers another set of great characters, some returning from the previous books (I love the Bubalah Brigade) and some (especially the bad guys) new to this story. Well worth the read!

Perfect combination - intrigue and humor! Mr. Rosenfelt is an expert weaver of characters committing crime and our favorite sleuths to solve it. I have read most of his books and each is a very enjoyable read without the nightmarish scenarios. And I am sure his favorite pooches help unlock the mystery during their walks. Enjoy!

I have read most of the Andy Carpenter series and have really enjoyed, them, especially as I come from the area in which these stories take place. I especially enjoyed this one, just a really good read, kept my interest throughout. I also listened to the audiobook, which was great with the talent of Grover Gardner. Definitely recommend this book!
