About the Author

Elicka Peterson-Sparks, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology in the Department of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Dr. Peterson-Sparks’ research focuses on victimology, the criminogenic impact of religion, domestic violence, and homicide. She has published scholarly articles on homicide, domestic violence, sex offending, jury decision-making, juvenile justice, actuarial justice, mentoring, police response to intimate partner violence, and criminological theory, and her research has appeared in criminological journals such as Theoretical Criminology, Homicide Studies, Punishment & Society, The Criminal Justice Law Review, and The Journal of Criminal Justice Education. Dr. Peterson-Sparks is the author of the book, The Devil You Know: The Surprising Link between Conservative Christianity and Crime. She is currently the co-principal investigator of a five-state ethnographic study of rural and interstate prostitution in the Southeast. Kit Gruelle is a survivor of domestic violence and has worked as an advocate for battered women and their children for nearly 30 years. She started her work as a crisis-line volunteer in Durham, North Carolina in the mid-1980s at the Orange-Durham Coalition for Battered Women. In 1995, she created and coordinated the Bridges Program, a coordinated community response program (CCR), at Family Violence and Rape Crisis Services in Chatham County, North Carolina. In 2012, she completed her sociology degree (with a concentration in violence against women) at Appalachian State University. In 2001, she created the documentary film project Private Violence: The Movement against Battering in America. The feature-length film, Private Violence, directed by Cynthia Hill, premiered in January, 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival and on HBO on October 20, 2014 (it is currently nominated for an Emmy). The author writes crisply and clearly and not only objectively describes his personal journey to becoming a fighter, but skillfully incorporates historical and literary references, as well as scientific information, all of which provide added texture and information to his subjective observations. Before reading this book, I knew little about mixed martial arts, believing it to be barbaric, cruel, brutal, etc. But Josh Rosenblatt can write and he gave me a new appreciation of the sport and the sacrifices required to participate. He chronicles his transformation from a thirty something out of shape hedonist, pacifist intellectual to a man prepared to inflict and endure extreme physical and mental punishment. Why did he do this? You will have to read the book and I highly recommend it. Throughout his journey filled with personal doubts and backslides leading up to his official fight in a cage, the author educates and enlightens us with physiology and anatomy research as well as historical, literary and spiritual references. Rather than distract, these references explain why the journey was so important. The description of the months, weeks, days, hours and minutes leading up to the fight kept me reading and I could not put the book down. I look forward to reading more of this author's books.

A great read! Loved the writing. Book arrived. I picked it up in the AM and couldn’t put it down until i finished. I could care less about MWAA fighting but I loved the book! It’s more about what it means to live. Some good interesting history of boxing, history of writers relationship with boxing and history of kicking Nazi’s asses, too!

This book took swings at my reality, slowly and methodically like Poe's pendulum- with his observations on fighting cutting me, barely at first, forcing me to ask myself if I was truly living- fully experiencing all life has to offer. Then offering a rational reprieve as the pendulum swings away and he objectively took a more reasonable and rational approach to his journey. Then cutting again as he goes back to how alive fighting- and courting death and destruction- makes him feel. The suspense of the pending fight becomes greater than the fight itself, and it was a thrilling tale and exploration of what it means to be alive.

I found this book a very personal and well written exposition about growing up fearful in family that feared violence and carrying the fear with anger into adulthood.After submerging the angst with alcohol,,sex and drugs for years stumbling upon and becoming intrigued by the idea of learning martial arts and boxing as a more direct way. We follow his journey in that pursuit

I loved this book by Josh Rosenblatt.I too have pondered the question of “why we fight”.And, As a spectator, I have often wondered “why do we humans love to watch fights?” We will watch a masterful contest between two skilled fighters for sure. But really, who among us could actually turn away from a bar room brawl if it unfolded right in front of us? I appreciate the author’s honesty in describing his journey with MMA fighting. He spoke about what he learned of himself and his Jewish ancestory. He spoke about his true experiences and not what he thought others would want to hear. There was no false modesty.The author also showed an impressive knowledge of physiology and neuroanatomy.I would love to see this author do something with the history of unarmed personal comba, and the human experience.So, Josh Rosenblatt, I hope you read this☺️

25 years ago I rented the movie Vision Quest, popped it into my Panasonic VHS tape player, and immediately was captivated by the sports anti-hero Louden Swain. I went so far as to read the Terry Davis young adult novel upon which the movie was based, which John Irving called “The truest novel about growing up since Catcher in the Rye.” Ever since, I’ve been on my own vision quest to communicate the brilliance of this introspective take on the self-sacrifice and discipline of dropping weight and wrestling, as well as Louden’s soul-searching reflections on facing fears and becoming a man, to anyone who will listen. Fortunately, one friend did, and recommended I read Josh Rosenblatt’s Why We Fight, or as I think of it now, the Jewish Vision Quest.Unlike Louden, Josh Rosenblatt is an adult, and he sacrificed, trained, and even cut weight in order to fight in an MMA match as opposed to wrestling, but the insights into learning discipline, as well as the transformation that comes from facing fears and understanding what motivates us and what we are capable of are all there. While the movie Vision Quest had a Hollywood ending, Davis’ novel ends with Louden walking on to the mat to face his ultimate opponent. This book was on its way to being an excellent story until it got to a chapter that had nothing to do with the story and everything to do with the author’s ideological and political views. His sanctimonious drivel ruined the rest of the story and left me disgusted with the author.

This is an excellent way to dive into Anthony J Melchiorri's series The Tide! While I have the complete series thus far individually, I like boxed sets so I can do a binge rereading of a series I love! I grabbed this not only for myself but also for my friends who love to read in this genre!Why do I love this series? First of all, the writing is strong and has great scientific explanations behind the "Bio-incident" since this is Melchiorri's area of expertise in his day job! His explanations are easy to understand so that you can fully enjoy the story. Next, his characters are very well developed and REAL! They are human - while heroic in nature and their actions, they still get hurt and feel guilt over those they cannot save. Third, the creatures are SCARY in description! Finally, even with all the action, the author's writing style pulls you in so you FEEL what is happening right along with the main characters! Oh, and there is even a heroic golden retriever named Maggie who I love as a character as well! :)I will be rereading and revisiting my friends in the story as I wait for the next book in the series! This is a great way for me to get through half the series in one go! Anthony Melchiorri is one of my favorite writers - and he has definitely grown in his writing from the beginning. Read this series! You'll love it!

I really liked the basic premise. It is something somewhat possible in today's bio warfare world but the books have MANY logical flaws. Two prime examples early in the first book:1 - a team wearing biological positive pressure suits can 'smell' diesel which is impossible in a positive pressure suit.2 - same team is deep inside a metal 'drilling platform' yet their radios work fine to communicate with their boat. Not possible.Add to the many logical errors the poor editing and seemingly endless repeats of the star character managing to survive impossible scenarios, not once but dozens of times. And of course he is 'back in action' with broken ribs and still portrayed as a nearly invulnerable fighting machine. And after four books there is very little resolved and the writer expects you to buy many more books at a much higher price to find out what happens. I know what happens. The star keeps doing the impossible and more bad guys keep showing up. I won't waste my money on such dribble.

We, the reader, get to see how the lives of the Hunters are directly or indirectly affected by the outbreak and the resulting genetic mutations. To me, this series delves into the heart of humanity at its best and worst.

Captain Holland and the Hunters are featured in this book set...Four truly outstanding selections and a great price. Personally I used to 'shy' away from these box sets but have learned to appreciate them more as time goes along. They are available on my Kindle for the future whenever I wish to read them again. Am sure at some point that I will read these again.I love the fact that all four of these are action packed, heart throbbing and will raise your blood pressure (well maybe not that last one so much but...)...the pandemic and the pandemonium are real as are the characters....My, oh my...One of the things I truly admired was the science behind the writing. Some authors use their pen indiscriminately and write words to fit the story. In this case, the author has a scientific background and utilizes his knowledge to put words on paper that are justified by his education. Well done...Plot is solid, characters are well defined and the action is fast paced.... Nothing better than a covert mission to stir the reader's imagination.Looking forward to the next one this author writes...Most highly recommended..

All of us in the field must have this book, it codifies our common language for dealing with patients with these tumors, whether we are neuropathologists, other pathologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, or CNS tumor research scientists.

This is a fantastic and informative book that will benefit a wide audience. Each tumor has its own dedicated section that are in turn broken up into easy to digest subsections including (but not limited to) general overview, WHO classification, pathology, genetic markers and prognosis. In this way, each individual audience has access to the information specific to them - as an example, I am CEO of a scientific research company and the subsections about pathology and mode of spread for a tumor is of particular interest to me, whereas I can happily skip the genetics subsection and it won't affect my work.This book is expensive but well worth it and it is a very sound investment.

And then there was one girl left. In the previous two books in the series Michelle had a front row seat of seeing her BFFs Jan and Sammi find their happily ever after now it is her turn to shine. What is interesting about Michelle is that she seems to be so “put together” & a strict rule follower at least to the outside world. Then enters CJ who comes and mixes it up for her. The pairing is interesting because relationship outlook was deeply affected by their respective parents’ marriages. I won’t give away too much, but I think in the end their pairing put things in perspective for both characters. Some characters got away a little too easy, but that’s just my opinion. Overall, I really liked this book and the mention of a certain character from a previous book. As always, I am looking forward to the next adventure from the author.

First off,I'm sad that this trilogy is over. I absolutely loved reading about these three best friends. One of the reasons I love reading Nadia Lee's books is because I feel like I can relate to some of the personalities and also because I tend to get lost in the stories. I really loved this book because I felt such a strong connection with Michelle. I seriously have Pinterest boards about my dream wedding and what I want in life (not binders like her, but close enough). There just aren't enough words to explain how much I truly enjoyed this books!

Michelle works two jobs and long hours seeking her perfect man and wedding. Also her mother's approval, which never comes. Then CJ appears in her life the best lover, a driven billionaire, a perfect body, and personality but never wants to get married. Both with past emotions that screw with their heads drives them. CJ the player wants Michelle who at first does not want him. The hunt begins. A fun LOVE story with twists and turns keeps you reading. The whole trilogy was great.

A funny romantic comedy with some sad parts. I enjoyed all three books in this series. While the ending was really good, I would have thought the author would have put a good happy epilog telling about the three best friends and how their futures ended up. As well as all three couples should have signed pushups especially how their parents were. A romance for everyone to enjoy.

Michelle and CJ were the perfect couple!This story was full of love and life. So many people feel this way until they find their "one".Amazing job Nadia Lee! Cant ait to see what's next!

CJ was in love and didn't know it. Michelle was a rule followed and stood her ground. Both characters outlook on marriage was based on their experience with their parents. I thought both pairs were odd. Glad they found their HEA.

Each determines to live their lives based on preconceived notions about relationships. They stumble their way through to their own HEA.

I liked the humor, the characters and the story. All 3 stories were quick and easy to read. And of course, who doesn't love a happy ending.
