About the Author

Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. When he was ten, his father died and he and his mother moved to New England. He attended school at Dartmouth and Harvard, worked in a mill, taught, and took up farming, before he moved to England, where his first books of poetry, A Boy’s Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914), were published. North of Boston brought him recognition as the preeminent voice of New England and as one of America’s major poets. In 1915 he returned to the United States and settled on a farm in New Hampshire. Four volumes of his poetry, New Hampshire (1923), Collected Poems (1930), A Further Range (1936), and A Witness Tree (1942) were all awarded the Pulitzer Prize. He died in 1963.Susan Jeffers is the illustrator of such distinguished picture books as Three Jovial Huntsmen, a Caldecott Honor book; Rachel Field's Hitty; and the ABBY Award-winning Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, which was also a New York Times besteller. She lives in New York.

great book, the description doesn't really make clear that this little books is really a sort of a kids edition with only this poem in it and illustrations for each line on each page.

This is my go-to baby shower gift; Frost’s evocative poem is appreciated by children, and the illustrations (for my tastes) really capture the magic of that sacred moment. This was the first poem my son memorized. This beautiful little book opened the door for an appreciation for poetry that persists in his teenage years. Also, this book is a gift that the bigger kids in the family can enjoy and even read to the little ones.

My favorite poem since I was a kid (now 75), it's in a beautifully illustrated book. Every kid should have a copy of this poem and keep it forever......... or hand it down to their kids..

This particular poem is my favorite Robert Frost poem, and is one of my top five favorite poems. I was hoping that this book would portray the simple beauty and nuances of this poem, to read to my granddaughter. It more than met my expectations. Even my husband, who is a photographer and who doesn't read as much as I do, found the artwork in this book to convey beautifully the words of Frost's poem.This poem was not intended for children, and has many facets to it. But good poetry must be taught and appreciated early, and this book will help parents and teachers to show appreciation for poetry. If it doesn't start with the parents and teachers, then the children are never exposed to it.Whenever I read this poem, and now this book, it conveys a sense of peace, a sense of being quiet, of learning to look for the beauty in the world around you. I remember this poem from 4th grade (I am now 40). Even to this day, I could recite the 1st four lines and I haven't read the poem since 4th grade....until now. I now have a 3 yr old daughter and am searching for books to read to her above her age level. Seeking to introduce her to various subjects, authors, etc. Remembering this poem, I went specifically in search of it and found this book. I LOVE it! And so does my daughter. I love the gentleness of the illustrations, the little splash of color and the quietness it offers. My daughter loves the color, the horse and various animals, and, as any child does, searching for the hidden animals in some of the pages. When we sit and read this book, it's not just a one time reading. It's at least 4 times. I highly recommend this book not just for the literary benefit, but also for the little bit of quiet snuggling time you get........What can be better than that?

Susan Jeffer's illustrations are always delightful. I purchased the hardcover edition and was disappointed by how little the book is. I neglected to check it's measurements. Perhaps the paperback edition is larger.

This is such a gorgeous book. My daughter fell in love with poetry when she was very little, I'm sure this book had a part in that. She wanted it for her son for Christmas. Because it's re-released in a hardcover format (with a beautiful slip cover) I'm sure it will become a family heirloom. Books are heirlooms in our family!

This is one of those books that really hits you over the head with a life lesson. To make matters worse it rhymes. I don't mind some of the kids books that ryhme, but I find that the majority of them sacrifice any form of a story in their jilted effort to rhyme. Plus, I don't even think they do a good job of conveying the intended lesson. I do read it sometimes to my daughter, but she tends to lose interrst.

I have all boys, and they LOVE this book. It great for little boys who are just discovering and testing their bodies and their power. Proper use of power is necessary for well-adjusted boys and men. It lets them know that its ok to be frustrated, but teaches that how you express that frustration is the difference between a super-hero, and a villain

This book totally pulled my daughter of a gigantic tantrum. She loves it and has requested to read it dozens of times especially when she is struggling with frustration and anger. I think this book has helped her realize that everyone experiences these emotions, and that feeling anger or frustration does not make you a bad person. This is an absolutely fantastic book for kids with low self-esteem and impulse control issues, but would also be a cute book for any child.

At first I wasn't sure if my son would like this because he's REALLY into Marvel and PJ Masks - but this book is a huge hit and teaches kids that it's okay to be human but also that we choose how we react towards others when upset. Great book!

We love this book! We have read this book every night since it arrived a few days ago. The pictures are fabulous and the message is meaningful. Many different people are represented in this book. Kids can see alternative ways to handle their big feelings with this beautiful rhyming language.

My son loves this book, and I do too! I enjoy the underlying lesson, and it's fun to read out loud. It's also a good book for young readers to start recognizing rhymes.

I originally bought the first printing of this book as I wanted to learn how to use a map and compass. I was a total beginner to orienteering and wanted an "easy to read" book that could teach me the basics in as little time as possible. This book did the job wonderfully. In fact, over a decade later, I decided to see if a new addition had come out and when I found there was a third addition, (I missed the second) I quickly bought it. I didn't write a review after I bought the third edition but in checking after another couple of years to see if another edition was printed (it hasn't) I started reading some of the reviews online and decided I should post my own.There have been some disparaging remarks about this book and they seem to come on two levels. The first is that it isn't the book called Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills. I have to admit that I never read that book but I also admit there is a big reason as to why I haven't. And that is I already read this book and so there wasn't a need to read a more detailed text. The second problem people have with the book is that the author teaches how to orient the map with the compass. Some people have commented that this isn't necessary anymore as all a hiker needs to do is to go out and buy a new compass that has an adjustable declination feature on it, eliminating the need to orient map and compass together. My comment to that is I would ask these people if they also advocate not bothering to learn addition and subtraction because they can just go out and buy a calculator? I believe that just like the basics in math, the basics of matching a map and compass should still be taught as one day, you might find yourself with only a basic compass that you'll need to use. Once you read this book, you'll never forget how to do it.Ms. Fleming's book is more than a guide on how to use map and compass though. It teaches the reader exactly what the title says: How to stay found. In fact, if you only wanted to learn map and compass, you'd only need to read Chapters 3, 4 and 5. In addition to those topics, Ms. Fleming teaches natural route finding methods, route planning, how to stay found and teaching children how to stay found. She also includes a chapter on route finding in the snow, which as you might expect, can be very tricky. This is an easy to read and understand book. In fact, after I read it, I was easily able to transfer the skills I learned to the type of compass I owned at the time, which was a military style, lensatic one. (I've since took Ms. Fleming's advice and went to a base plate style compass.) I thoroughly recommend this book to any person with little or no compass/map skills who wants a quick and easy read to give them the basic skills in this area.
