God in the Wasteland has one primary thesis - to demonstrate the ongoing corruptive nature that modernity has on the Christian Church today.David F. Wells provides a well-researched, convincing argument. He briefly defines modernity, differentiating it from modernism and then delves to explore how this has dramatically caused God to become "weightless".I have to confess that, as interesting as I found this topic, at times I put down the book with my "ears ringing" for the chapters are somewhat repetitive in content and frequently the whole books feels like a rant.Another small criticism is that David Wells does not really provide any concrete solutions to the problem. He does cite some research linking growth of the church with return to orthodoxy but there are no concrete, practical solutions .Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to any Christian. Certainly, David's thesis is well mirrored in the church today.- sermons are pathetically therapeutic, light and void of theology; Christians are superficial in their understanding.

The primary concern of God in the Wasteland is the influence modernism and modernity has had on the Christian Church as a whole. Wells, a theology professor, offers a look at the trend of mega-church building, its emphasis on marketing, and its effects on theology. He discusses how the philosophies of Christianity, postmodernism, and New Age spiritualism have reacted to modernism and its perhaps prematurely called death - the end of the "Enlightenment project." In the wake of the centuries old endeavor, a progression towards the ideal of man, the effects are still felt in the church. Christians are faced with re-establishing their relationship with God after distancing themselves for those centuries.There are two methods of modernism that the Church has incorporated: marketing and giving the people what they want. This results from an attitude shared with capitalism: the people are consumers. This, consequently, makes God the product and the Church the salesman. The terms are irreligious, but as Wells point out, they are used by those practicing a church growth doctrine. The exemplar of this doctrine is George Barna, who applies business models to churches to make them grow. He states that pastors would do better to have a Master of Business Administration degree, rather than a Master of Divinity. Modern pastors need "gifts" of delegation, confidence, interaction, decision-making, visibility, practicality, accountability, and discernment. Barna suggests the power of visual realization, envisioning the large church and making it happen. The greatest controversy is over his idea of adapting the product to the customer's needs. Another advocate of a more `pragmatic' approach to church building is David Macavran, who published Understanding Church Growth and established the American Institute for Church Growth in the 1970's. Macavran used psychology, marketing, and behavio9ral health research for his theories. Theology was conspicuously missing.Giving the people what they want prompts the question what should the Church compromise? As modernism dominates in society at large, or the reactionary postmodernism or New Age spiritualism among segments of society, the Church may embrace the influence in order to attract members of society. Teachings on God's transcendence, holiness, providence are taught much less than it once was. Condemnation of sin, emphasizing God's judgment, and the reality of Hell are minimized as these do not appeal to the consumer as sovereign, another philosophy some modern churches share with capitalism, along with ideas finding legitimacy and value in the marketplace. Instead a multi-media presentation is made to self-interest. Wells writes of this environment, "It is here that entertainment and worship are not merely interspersed but often indistinguishable. And it is here, where life should be receiving its most serious and sustained analysis, that tons of literature and countless hours of television and radio programming are being produced that contain nothing more than the sorts of empty clichés and hollow comforts that are available everywhere else in the modernized world ... at this very moment, evangelicalism has bought cultural acceptability by emptying itself of serious thought, serious theology, serious worship, and serious practice in the larger culture" (27).Modernization within the church has fostered two approaches: the therapeutic and the managerial. The therapeutic approach sees sin as a sickness, and the right technique is available in the marketplace to heal people. The manifestation of this is the support group. The managerial approach looks for efficient techniques for happiness.Another way modernism may affect the Church, though not by purposeful program, but by a pervasive philosophy in society, is the elevation of the individual, beyond the appeal to consumer or patient. Modernism replaced God with self. Philosophers such as Kant, Nietzsche, Rority, and Fish not only put self on the throne as legislator and arbiter of truth and justice, but elevate the self to become creator of reality. They bring into question whether there is an external reality, which brings into doubt any external God to whose image the self should conform. "Thus thwarted in their effort to find meaning outside themselves, moderns have sought to relocate all reality internally, detached from any fixed moral norms" (94).Wells recognizes effects of modernism in general, but we can spot them within the Church too. One effect is the attitude and language of victimhood. "This spiral into pervasive victimhood... marks a corresponding erosion of personal responsibility, and suggests that genuine moral discourse about what is right and wrong, irrespective of private interests, is increasingly less possible. Contemporary culture has so diminished our moral capacity, so robbed us of a concern to act responsibly, that we tend to resent moral demands from without or simply to dismiss them out of hand" (135).The appeal to self-interest, the adaptation of the Church, the emphasis of certain socially accepted traits of God and a suppression or denial of the unpopular traits, all elevate the value of self while diminishing the values of God. God becomes weightless. "...what was once objective in God's being, what once stood over against the sinner, is either being lost or transformed into something we discover first and foremost in ourselves in such a way that God's immanence is typically psychologized. ...A God with whom we are on such easy terms and whose reality is little different from our own - a God who is merely there to satisfy our needs - has no real authority to compel and will soon bore us" (92-93). This passage, the last line especially, is a bleak prophecy that appears to be taking place now.

In "God in the Wasteland..." David Wells continues the examination of the decline of evangelicalism he began in "No Place for Truth" taking it to such a depth of content and analysis that there is no doubt in my mind that we are in trouble. Modernity (or Post-modernity depending on your view) has infiltrated the church to such a degree that we are more worldly than not. Dr. Wells calls us to let God "weigh heavily" on us and the Church. He calls us to be turn away from the worldliness that we have adopted and turn toward God. Only then can we truly be the Church, an alternate culture in a decaying world. There is so much to this argument that it would be hard to even scratch the surface in this review. I can only urge you to read and consider Dr. Wells' observations and how you need to respond to the crisis at hand. In addition to his penetrating observations Dr. Wells also includes the raw data from a study of two groups of seminarians eleven years apart and their responses to a battery of questions designed to assess their world-view. This fascinating book is a must read for all those concerned with the state of the Church.

Great analysis of Evangelicalism from 25 ago that is still very relevant today. The author wrote prophetically about the church and its relation with this fallen world we live in. We all must read this and those who are not still aware of the problem must have their eyes opened. Necessary reading for the Christian.

I was not familiar with David Wells until this year, but having read "No Place for Truth," I could not wait to read this one. I am now on my fourth book by David Wells since May and looking forward to two more this summer. His work is well documented, thought provoking, and well written. If you like to think, then I highly recommend David F. Wells, "God in the Wastelands."

This book is extremely important to read. It's hard- that is, it is to be read slowly and a bit at a time. However, its message is critical to our day. Though it was published almost 20 years ago, its message is even more true and significant today.One of the best books I have ever read.

This book absolutely floored me in all the best ways possible. The author displays a mastery of complex plot construction that all fits properly together-- along with solid character development and realistic-sounding dialogue. She evokes the full gamut of emotions from the reader. We feel the anguish, romance, pain, laughter, loss, anger and more along with the characters, all in perfectly proportioned doses.I must highlight the excellent dialogue especially. I can't think of another book that does conversations better. We're always told how witty and charming Elizabeth is, but this book lets us hear it in her own voice. Considering the level of tension that builds and builds and builds throughout the book, Lizzy's irrepressible humor in every situation is a welcome delight. After she and Darcy marry, we get to hear how his humor matches hers. The difference is that his delivery is described as deadpan and solemn, so usually it's only Elizabeth who recognizes that he's not serious. Intricate details describe the little quirks that speakers and listeners display, revealing even more about the characters.The focal story is less Elizabeth-and-Darcy than it is Elizabeth-and-Jane and Elizabeth-and-Bingley. The point of view of the narration shifts among the four key characters here whose lives are intertwined: Elizabeth, Darcy, Jane and Bingley. Often this method of writing a story doesn't work because it can feel disjointed. There are even scenes here described more than once, which works even more rarely. However, each character's perspective of events is crucial to the development of this particular plot because of all the misunderstandings that develop. Not only does it work here, it's essential.There are also times when the story follows a particular character and intentionally leaves out things that happen elsewhere. You become as surprised as the character you're shadowing when he or she becomes aware of them, and then the story backtracks to tell what actually happened during the interim. Very effective!Interestingly, Charles Bingley's less admirable qualities are taken to extremes but not to the point where it's inconsistent with Jane Austen's character. He needs direction from Darcy or his sisters in order to make important decisions unless he's acting impulsively, in which case he doesn't think things through at all. He's prone to jumping to conclusions and assuming things that just aren't true. In addition, his letter-writing is abysmal and leads to some avoidable misunderstanding. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but his clueless and careless behavior wreaks most of the trouble in this book.Mrs. Bennet has doted on her daughter Jane for her entire life, bragging about the marvelous match she's certain to make. It's expected that as long as Jane sits serenely, looking as beautiful as she does, she will be admired. And she IS admired. She's the beauty queen of Meryton. But while the men admire Jane, they all love to hang with Lizzy because she's a lot more outgoing and fun. Bingley's abandonment after the Netherfield ball adversely affects Jane's self-confidence, and subsequent events in the book shatter it.When Bingley finally does return to Meryton, Jane doesn't know how to encourage him and feels awkward. She is flustered and withdrawn, leaving him thoroughly confused. Elizabeth reassures Bingley that her sister has feelings for him, but he gradually starts to believe that perhaps he's trying to woo the wrong sister. And Jane, who never resented her sister's popularity before, starts down a dark path to jealousy and bitterness that pervades the rest of the story. You may not like her much throughout, but you'll understand why she feels and acts the way she does.Interestingly, Caroline Bingley isn't as much the villain in this imagining as Lady Ashby, who is married to Colonel Fitzwilliam's eldest brother, the Visount. Both Lord and Lady Ashby are nasty pieces of work, but she's more actively malicious. Wickham significantly affects the plot development despite the fact that he doesn't actually appear much. Lady Catherine, although completely antagonistic and unreasonable, is present more often, but you'll end up feeling sympathetic as you learn more about what's going on with her.My new favorite add-on character to any Pride and Prejudice variation I've ever read is Mrs. Sinclair. She is the 81-year-old mother-in-law of Lord Matlock. This spitfire speaks her mind and takes no prisoners, stating the obvious in hysterically funny fashion. She adds a wonderful element to every scene in which she appears.Talk about a build-up! The rising action in the book builds to the point where everything converges at the best climactic scene I've come across in a long time. It's a humdinger. Once the resolution is reached, the book has the grace to know it's time to end, and it does.Even though this is available free through my Kindle Unlimited program, I bought it. It's one I'll be re-reading, for sure.

This was an absolutely perfect read. Thrilling, romantic, passionate and funny. The dry wit was extraordinary clever. The sexual tension was beautifully done (nothing explicit).Adored this Elizabeth and Darcy, one of my favourite portraits of theme ever.I applaud this author for not falling in to trap of numerous (and tedious) misunderstandings. Darcy waists no time to tell Bingley of his role in concealing that Jane was in London and that he might be mistaken in her supposed indifference.Bingley leaves for Hertfordshire but Darcy does not follow, feeling all hope is lost with Elizabeth.This part of the book, before ODC is reunited, is heart-wrenchingly angsty but the anguish will be worth it. ODC comes to an understanding much earlier than canon (and what a lovely scene it was) but their trials are far from over. Elizabeth has several suitors that are intent on making their sentiments known. Still, their biggest enemies comes from within the family. Jane and Bingley will surprise you in this fic. They both act abominable... Will not elaborate to not spoil your read.This is one of the best P&P variations I have ever read. It is on my top 10 list of the 600+ variations I have read.Hopefully this author have, or at least will, write more stories. I am amazed.Heartily recommend this book!!!

Let's just say "Mistaken" is a wonderful, slightly angsty, farce. Most of the time, you'll be laughing. This is, if you aren't a fan of Charles Bingley. By the end of this one, you'll be on Caroline's side when it comes to her brother. As for Darcy and Elizabeth, they get together very early in the novel, but the "mistakes" everyone makes about their true (very passionate) relationship is what drives the plot. You'll be re-reading this one again and again.

I simply never reached that point of "a willing suspension of disbelief" in this novel. I am used to having JAFF authors ascribe unbelievable personality traits to characters, but this novel veers so far afield that it becomes simply uninteresting. Sorry, I cannot recommend this book.

Nice variation, if you don't mind some character changes. I have read 20-30 JAFF books, and I enjoyed this one. I like my books to have some substance, and not be over in 148 pages. This book was lengthy enough to tell a good story, and the author used decent vocabulary. It was an original tale for me. Most characters remained true to the original P&P version. Jane and Bingley were different. If you need those two characters unchanged, then this book will disappoint you. I typically don't like to see writers messing with Bingley and Jane, but I found this book to be an exception. I thought Lizzie and Darcy were sometimes a bit too verbose too often with their expression of love for each other. I recommend this book.

And before we were done he decided he wanted to learn to read.The story is fun, and the language is simple enough for kids to understand. The illustrations are also eye catching. I appreciate the help this series has given us in reaching some kids that didn't want to be reached.

I bought this for my son on the off chance he may enjoy it. Been a fan of Ursula for years and have always been meaning to buy one of the kids books for my son. Got the first Dragonbreath book and holy heck he loved it! So much that he asked for more! I bought the 4th book at the bookstore and got 2 and 3 via Amazon. The rest are going into his Christmas list per his request! Can't wait to introduce him to the hampster princess as well. :D

This series struck a cord with my son at 8yrs old and he still claims it's one of his favorite series. He's a skilled but not enthusiastic reader. He also enjoyed the following books: The Hatchet, Wednesday Wars, Fablehaven Series, Notebook of Doom Series, and Eerie Elementary Series.

My son read this and said "mom can we get more of these?" He has been a reluctant reader so we encourage him to read anything that interests him. He's 10 so it may have been a bit easy for him but he really liked it. We will get the rest of this series.I chose this book because I was getting a variety of books to peak his interest. This was the first one he chose to read.

Managed to keep my 8-year-old daughter's attention. I haven't noticed her rereading it, but she did get through it pretty quickly, and I do consider her a reluctant reader, so that's worth it for me.

Part of a Christmas gift for one of my grandsons who loves to read. He is really into comic book type stories and this series contains both comic book and chapter stories...a double win! I bought the first 3 series and I believe he will want to add to his library more of them. Highly recommend.

My son is 8 and is not the best reader but loves books. He wants to read books on his interest level and that are cool. They can be very hard to find. This book series is awesome for him because he can read it, but it is still age appropriate as well! Fun illustrations & stories.

This book will cast a large shadow over all other mutiny books, and turn the volume down on them. Beware!

Although these killings took place almost 400 years ago on deserted islands in a then barely explored corner of the Indian Ocean, the scale of these crimes makes Helter Skelter look like the JV team! The story did actually remind me of the Charles Manson killings, in which another megalomaniacal madman had others do his heinous bidding.The book is very well written and researched, although at times the author digresses into excessive background detail that dampens any expectation that this will be a dramatic page-turner throughout. Nevertheless, it certainly kept my interest consistently enough to successfully coax me into reading the entire book, along with its epilogue.The other issue with this book is just the disturbing nature of the subject matter (I had been completely unaware of this episode of history). Without revealing too much, however, I will simply say that there is a gratifying element of good triumphing over evil that is endemic to the story; not sure I would have finished reading the book if at some point it had become evident that that element was not going to be a part of the story line.

Life and physical accommodations aboard ship itself were a nightmare to all but the wealthiest travelers .Based on extensive research, including ship's logs, the Dutch Trading Company's (VOC) records, memoirs and letters of several principals involved and even anthropological evidence unearthed in the 1960's and 70's, one is swept into a fascinating look at how a voyage of commerce to the East Indies ended in shipwreck, followed by the breakdown of civil behavior among the survivors and leading to the murders of dozens of innocent people for no reason other than to satisfy the blood lust of the leader of a relatively (at first) small number of mutineers.That any of the crew and passengers survived, marooned on a small coral atoll in the East Indian Sea is astonishing. The subsequent rescue of survivors and punishment of those guilty for the slaughter provides a fitting end to this well written sea tale.To readers interested in expanding their knowledge of world History I heartily recommend this book. The wreck itself was a disaster but what some of the survivors did to their shipmates afterward is hard to believe and terrible to read about, even in todays worlds of serial killers and mass murders.Reading this book it's difficult to believe that human beings can commit some of the acts that are depicted. And for no real reason other than to wield power over others.This book also paints a detailed and rather unflattering portrait of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and it's business practices. While the ship wreck survivors acted the way they did to gain power and survive a hostile landscape, the VOC did it out of pure greed. I'm not sure who comes off looking worse in the end...A great historical account of a dark page in world history, easy to read and informative, it sheds light on a little seen part of history, definitely worth a look.

The title of this book is somewhat misleading, in that "heresy" is the least of the offences committed by the guy. And it didn't really play much of a role in how this story unfolds. But the actions described in this book are indeed shocking, and so depraved, I was surprised I had never heard of it before. What went on after the Batavia sank was so horrendous, it is hard to believe - but it really happened. Anyone interested in Dutch history would like this book. It goes into a lot of detail about the Dutch East India Company and how they did business. Most of the names are unpronounceable, but other than that, it is a most interesting read.

A fantastic narrative of one of the grimmer events of the age of sail. It's something more people in the modern age should read. Currently, there's a lot of misplaced longing for a past that is supposed to somehow be more moral, noble, chivalrous, and such. The reality is that there is no such past. Nostalgia is history poorly remembered. The Anabaptists were as crazy as Al-Quaeda or Daesh. The Dutch East India Company was as corrupt, shambling, and destructive as any modern corporate hegemon. And life was dangerous, full of deadly diseases, crazy people, social prejudice, and superstition. Mike Dash does a good job of turning the various chronicles, records,and recollections of this shocking episode into a readable and accessible story. There's no shortage of extra data at the end for those who want to really get into the details. That's the most salient part: this isn't the work of some crazy novelist, but the horrifying history you didn't learn about in school - a journey into the dark heart of humanity that has gone off the rails. Oh, and do not read this before going to bed.
